A far worse crime, and worthy of a ban, is ending a sentence with a preposition.

Only from those who have no knowledge about correct English grammar and usage.

"Ending sentences with prepositions

Were you taught that a preposition should never be placed at the end of a sentence? There are times when it would be pretty much impossible to organize a sentence in a way that would avoid doing this, for example:

in some passive expressions:
√ The dress had not even been paid for.
X Paid for the dress had not even been.

√ The match was rained off.
X Rained off was the match.

in relative clauses and questions that include verbs with linked adverbs or prepositions:
√ What did you put that there for?
X For what [reason] did you put that there?

√ They must be convinced of the commitment they are taking on.
X Of the commitment they are taking on they must be convinced.

There’s no necessity to ban prepositions from the end of sentences. Ending a sentence with a preposition is a perfectly natural part of the structure of modern English."

1. You shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition. Wrong! You shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition when the sentence would mean the same thing if you left off the preposition. That means "Where are you at?" is wrong because "Where are you?" means the same thing. But there are many sentences where the final preposition is part of a phrasal verb or is necessary to keep from making stuffy, stilted sentences: “I'm going to throw up,” “Let's kiss and make up,” and “What are you waiting for” are just a few examples.

At my school if you had written that sentence, you would be standing outside in the rain with your hands on your head.

You do not end sentences in prepositions.

End.

You'd probably get away with it out in the colonies though so I'm sure most on this board won't mind.

If you have been here for more than a few weeks you will have noticed that these forums – particularly the Politicians Suck board – has become a far less pleasant place of late. We ALL need to change our ways to make this a more fun place to be and to debate/complain/shout our particular point of view. The problems I see are as follows:

1)       Thread spamming. We don’t need 43 threads on Oakeshott and Windsor. We don’t need the daily anti-Bolt thread nor do we need the daily I hate Gillard rant. New threads need to be genuinely new topics. Good topics are being lost in the flood of rubbish. I am asking people to voluntarily (at this stage) limit themselves to a maximum of three new threads per day.

2)      Abuse. We all know who the main offenders are. We debate robustly and we mock and hassle each other from our own points of view. This is the way of real debate. But some cross the line. We need to reign in the truly offensive, the hate, the vile accusations and the bully actions. These WILL change.

3)      Idiocy. I have a low threshold for genuine stupidity. Not mistakes, not errors of judgement but full-blown cringe-worthy idiocy. There is a growing amount of that. It needs to stop as well. I’m not referring to Bill_crany/Prevailing/Corporate_whitey or Wharfy and their type. They are probably literally insane and you can just filter them out. I mean those whose posts have all the feel of a drunken rant or a drug-fuelled fantasy. They need to end as well.

I have noticed that a lot of previously good posters have either left or joined the ‘dark side’ of ugly debate. That is in response to the growing shrill and bitter atmosphere here. A reasonable thread with reasonable posts gets lost in the growing storm of crap flowing around here.

It needs to change and it will change as each of us just tones it down a bit. I can dish it out pretty well myself and I need to dial it back as well. But there is a line; a line over which we should not cross or even get close to crossing. A growing number however are crossing it almost daily.

This is OUR board, our place to vent, to mock to applaud and to complain. If it is to return to that kind of place these things must stop.

Your assistance is requested.

I,am not quite sure in what way this subject could be improved. Is it just meant to be similar to  the parliamentary debates, which are nothing but a circus, and the actors are well paid for, as Mr.Tanner in his last book stated, or can we, the participants on this forum, in a small way influence the government on some matters which are of concern to us and the community at large.
One subject, which I consider very important, is, the governments "Three pillar policy" in regards to the age.
It is only implemented in Australia, it keeps some 70% of age-pension recipients, just above the breadline, while it rewards the top 30% with huge tax concessions.
So far, no media will write or talk about this subject at all, because the compulsory super is the biggest gravy-train for the elites and they want to keep it that way as long as possible.

in the 1950s perhaps. But current common usage dictates otherwise.

are you STILL whining like a little girl? vilification is NOT tolerated on here and never has been and certainly not by me. you just want to impose YOUR standards and ignore others. so religious vilification is ok but woe betide anyone who calls you a poof, right?

you would get so much more tolerance if you actually gave some back.

you are a sook. a sook who cant handle different opinions. a sook that wants tolerance for HIMSELF but wont give it back to others. A sook that wants acceptance of his own behaviour but refuses to grant it to others.

come back when you want to behave tghe way you expect from others.
