Hundreds of teens flown in to marry older Australians

This is the original heading from the Herald Sun report. Some bright spark has changed it to suit their agenda/blog

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/visa-alarm-over-imported-teen-brides/...

Most are from the Middle East or South-East Asia.

Come now, Pansi. We can't let facts get in the way of our Islamophobia now, can we?

That was not the claim. It refers specifically to young people. This reflects current law.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to protect children before they get into these situations? Or do you think the children that step forward represent all the abusive relationships resulting from marriages arranged from overseas?

So you see marriage to an older man as a valid way for parents to prevent their child falling victim to their own lack of self control?

Where's the ABC reference to the 10yr old?

You won't find it. You know why? Cos it's bullshit.

Undecided

I told you it was bullshit. lol

You are the only one who ever mentioned a 10 year old.
Because you misread the year 10 reference. Because you want to nurture your raging resentment.

What hope for these girls with 'feminist' like you on their side?

When you were 17, were you dreaming of men in their 40s and 50s from another country as the fathers of your children?

What I wanna know, is how many of these young brides are being trafficked into inter-racial marriages - i.e. mail order Asian brides for white anglo men...

I also wanna know why the emphasis on 'Muslim' girls - given that many Asians aren't Muslims...

It's the law that 17 year olds wanting to marry 20 year olds are scrutinized? By who?

Of course it would be a good idea to prevent anybody from marrying into an abusive situation; the question is how?

I think the spouse visa program should be scrapped.  These young girls need protecting from their families, so we must intervene on their behalf.  It's not okay to marry your daughter off to an old man, it's disgusting and it has to stop.

You want to scrap visas for the overseas fiances of Australian men to join them? I don't like your chances.

It shouldn't be too hard to fix, they have to decide what is an acceptable age difference and alarm bells will then ring if the gap is obviously too great.

You're making a link between 'age difference' and abuse. Outside of the extremes of paedophilia that isn't the case. May I remind you for instance that there's nearly a forty year age gap between Rupert Murdoch and his Asian wife and from all accounts that's working for them.

I'm not entirely out of sympathy with what you're saying, but it's a very difficult area to legislate about. Different things are attractive to different people. That ones rich, that ones beautiful, that ones brilliant, that ones famous, there's even people who are attracted by missing limbs and some young people find age attractive. I don't think we can be judgemental about that. Of course we can be judgemental about coercion, but we have laws in place to deal with that.
