Good Movies
Nov 7th, 2011 at 9:03pm

I LOVE good movies, and I watch a lot of them, (really really really, a LOT)
Given that fact I have to admit to feeling a wee bit jaded about the quality of movies coming out these days, and I often find myself trolling review sites for recomendations for "hidden gems" in the cinematic world.

I have been impressed by the eclectic mix of music that our members have linked to in the "What are you listening to?" thread, and thought it would be great to hear what movies you guys like, or dislike.

I have found most of the films that I have enjoyed the most, of late, have been small independent films, and I just watched "Transamerica", which is about a woman/man, getting their life and relationships sorted before undergoing surgery for gender reassignment.
I never expected to empathise with such characters, but testament to the quality of the writing and performances, I actually did.

Other cool Independent films I liked were;
Wristcutters, A love story.
Garden State
The Locksmith
Freeway
Defendor
Birds of America
Rushmore
The Royal Tenenbaums
Yellow Handkerchief
and finally, but certainly not least,
The Tao of Steve.

They were all good films, some are GREAT films, but I am sure there must be many more unknown gems like these out there, so share your likes.

I do not just like Indie films, I also enjoy popcorn movies like The A-Team, and the Transporter trilogy, also just about anything with jason (I'm tougher than a steak from sizzler), Statham.
Good fellas, and Master and Commander tie as my favourite fims ever, with Master probably inchi9ng ahead because I can watch it over, and over, and enjoy it every time(well into double digits).
So good hollywood films can be pretty awesome too, so, let us know what you like to watch.

Transamerica was pretty damn good.

Some Ken Russell and Peter Greenaway movies are a worthwhile watch.

Yes, Transamerica surprised me, and it was good that I had no idea what it was about, before watching it, because I probably would have written it off as not my cup of tea, because of the subject matter.
It just goes to show that almost anything can be good, if it is handled well.
I do not think I have seen any Ken Russel or Peter Greenaway films, but I will check them out.

I have heard that Ken Russel does a lot of weirdo pervy movies, with heaps of nudity.
Sounds good. Grin Grin Grin

It's weird that nudity has become a rarity in US movies. Check out the nudity in most movies made in the late 1960's and throughout the 1970's.

Then along came Ronnie and the moral majority and boobs on film in the US became a thing of the past.

A Zed and Two Noughts by Greenaway is a good watch. Very out there.

Thanks for the link to that old thread Soren.
In that thread you mentioned a film called La Lectrice, which I just checked on IMDB, and it does sound intriguing, so I will put that on my short list of films to see.
Ta.
I also checked Russell and Greenaway, and only one, or at least part of one, film, of theirs, I have seen was The Cook, his wife, etc, which I nver sat through, I gave up on that less than half way in.
Maybe I was too young to get it?

But nudity has become common place on US television....Very odd I agree...

Only on cable there - not on free to air. Their free to air is nothing like what we get to see (and hear) here.

I've had the same level of success with The Cook, His Wife....
I've had a few attempts and never made it all the way through. While it's Greenaway's most commercial movie, I thought it was quite dull - despite the things done with colours in it. Not even various combinations of drugs made it more watchable.

Ah well... I can tell you that it ends with the wife's lover roasted and presented like a pig and fed to the wife's husband Spica, to eat.
