Australia's oldest married couple reveal 'recipe for love' -  November 11, 2011


There's a new chapter in the world's great love stories.

First it was Romeo and Juliet, then Samson and Delilah and now there's Rowly and Elsie Olarenshaw.

They are Australia's longest married couple, and on this day, 78 years ago, they tied the knot.

But despite their milestone anniversary, the couple say their life-long love is no big deal.

"We didn't expect all this and it's quite unwarranted," Rowly said. "We haven't done anything to deserve it."

Both 97, the couple still live at home together.

They met when Rowly moved in next door to Elsie.

"I looked at him and said 'well you'll do me'," Elsie joked.

"And we just seemed to click."

They married at 19, had five daughters, and a gaggle of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Their secrets of marathon marriage include daily romantic walks, hobbies, and good friends.

"We never have an argument do we?" Rowly said looking at his beloved wife. "No I can't be bothered," she replied laughing.

The couple are Australia's longest married couple, but it is still puppy love.

"I still love him as much as ever," Elsie said.

Some of us would be most grateful in attaining 78 years of life. Not all of us get there. (I recently lost a dear school friend to breast cancer. She was 40.)
