The proposed basing of US troops in Australia is a serious issue and begs serious discussion, not the drivel that has been posted in this thread so far. Until someone wants to make a decent contribution I will discuss this elsewhere. Sad

Jeez bel, you're asking a bit much, aren't you?

When have the resident hysterical society undertaken any rational and valid argument about this sort of stuff. Personally I find it pretty friggen funny.  Grin

Remember it must be fact because it's on video and the source is from the US so it must be absolutely true.  Grin

Last night I heard on the controlled state media the host interviewing a Dr James Curren from the US Studies Center and Senior Lecturer in the Dept of History at Sydney university seriously discussing the possibility of setting up a US base in Australia the same as Guantanamo Bay - a facility where people can be taken, to be interrogated, tortured and held without due process indefinitely.  They concluded Australian public opinion may not be at that level...yet.  So they are weighing up just how far they can take the suspension of democracy and the imposition of fascism all the time.  I will use the footage in an up coming youtube vlog I will be doing on the forth coming armed US occupation of Australia.

Pure science fiction and nothing more.

Well, suspending partisanship for a moment, is it? We haven't been told much detail about these arrangements have we? Leaving aside interrorgations who's going to be doing the castering? What are the employment and economic benefits for Australia?

It's a Marine base....I'd think they'll hire locals for basic non-classifed work...Food prep, clerical stuff...general support staff work.....

Plus buying locally sourced goods, and of course off-base entertainment (restaurants, pubs, shops, tourism etc)....Military bases are always good for local economies...Look at Wagga Wagga for example, it basically lives off Kapooka army and Forest Hill airforce/navy air corp training facilities

You will find that US military bases are self contained communities and the occupants have little need to rely on local businesses for their needs. given that 2500 personnel is a fairly small size by US standards there may not be the full range of facilities but there will be bars, fast food outlets, shops and recreational facilities that will be much cheaper than the local alternatives.

Ok, the yanks are NOT getting their own base, they will be allocated a part of Robertson Barracks in Darwin, they will use common facilities and provide thier own specialist requirements were required.

The US has had small contingents based on Australian military bases for decades, this one will be a bit larger.

There is no conspiracy.

Yes, but there are less restrictions on what you do, outside the base....

Even in the US, the service personnel tend to drink and eat outside the bases...Much the same as here really...

Don't know....quite possible. Which means it's more likely they'll seek entertainment in the town.....since our bases don't really have all the facilities that the US bases do...

That's right, and personally I doubt very much that it'll stop at 2,500 for long. That's just getting a foot in the door. So unless there's a contract for buying local all we have is a loss of sovreignty weighed against strategic interests. And the strategic interests are extremely complex.

There's no doubt that Gillard's reversal of policy regarding supply of uranium to India is part of the strategic tapestry she's neen weaving with Obama over the past month. Geographically Darwin would complete a network of major US bases. And is particularly necessary as some, like Okinawa. Come under regular unfavourable scrutiny by host nations.

I'm quite aware that those links come from what might be viewed as exteme left positions. Nevertheless the facts are facts. Do we really want a 'camp bondsteel' in the NT.?

Australian women will be pack raped by armed US Marines like in Japan and the US will refuse to hand those rapists over for trial.  I bet they have not even addressed the issue of rape because they know it will be covered up.

Oh come on Grey.....Do you seriously think they're going to import their meat, bread, fruit and veges from America??????

And remember it's NOT a US base..it's an Australian facility, with some barracks and warehouses set aside for US use...

We don't know the ins and outs of this arrangement yet. It may be that the facilites built for the US forces are integrated into the Australian base and there will not be the 'little America' setup common to US overseas bases. However if this is to be a permanent arrangement I can see the US eventuallly wanting to construct the facilites their people are used to on an overseas posting.

It may not reach the totally self sufficient stage it does in other parts of the world, but the US personnel stationed there will not need to shop in the local community for all their needs either.

Here's the 'ins and outs', they will be based at Robertson Barracks, it's an Australian military facility, they will intergrate with the standards of the base as they have always done in the past.

Yeh, that's right the US has had a semi-permenant presence on Australian bases before and that caused a huge problem didn't it?

They did not:

build their own base within our base

import their food from the US

expand exponetially from the argeed contingent

commit crimes against Australians and evade justice.

You people are carrying on like we're being friggen invaded and taken over by the US.  Angry
