I realise that Muso - but some of them would be here a great deal of the time.

Perhaps there is a problem with spambots, but there would be 5 members all changing the board to suit them. You know that will happen as has happened with other global moderators.

Obviously it's FD's decision - but I can see there will be 5 times as many complaints, 5 different styles of moderating and the members will end up being more disgruntled than ever.

This board will become like a boot camp and so much moderation will be resented.

I don't see it that way. I think five reasonable people will find a moderate consensus. Much better in fact than one would do.

There has always been more than one global mod.  At times a global mod. might disappear for a while - but usually you can get in touch with someone within a 12 hour period.

Grey I'm giving my opinion only. I've seen the ups and downs over the years on this board and 5 global moderators will kill off this board quicker than anything else will.

Do you believe it should be completely sterile? That's how it will end up with 5 people deleting posts and threads and banning people.

Are there any members out there who aren't in line for a global mod position who believe that 5 global moderators will result in this board being over moderated?

It depends on the moderators, Mantra. If they're just addressing the spam and the harsher personal insults, then the only difference 5 will make from 1 is that things will get done faster.

So be it Annie. Will you be offended when members make derogatory comments about Muslims or denigrate feminists on the General Board? Will you take action? I am just using that as an example - it's not personal, but every global moderator has his/her own ideals on what standard of behaviour is necessary.

It seems that most of the members are reasonably well behaved at present and don't need extra moderators watching their every move - but it looks as though it's going to happen.

Anyway I assume it's already been decided. So who have we got - you, Grey, L/W, Perceptions & Smithy?

Have fun.

Ok we seem to be getting serious.
Let me at least put your mind at ease about myself Mantra.
I have no intention or desire to change anything about the way this place is run, I have no desire to bann anyone and would not do so without at least giving 3 personal followed by 1 public warning.
As I said I think the current moderators are doing a good job, member run boards are the appointed mods problem , I don't see myself suddenly going into every board as some sort of thought police.
I don't even think I'd delete any post unless illegal or particularly abusive but then again I think a better option would be to leave the posters idiocy for all to see with a cutting put down added.
So rest assured nothing will change whether I am annioted a mod or not.

Mmmm I agree with Smithy, but I understand where you're coming from mantra and it isn't decided by a long shot. It's entirely up to FD what he does.

I personally hate racism, sexism etc. The forum I've spent most of my time (The Guardian, now closed) allowed a great deal of abuse and colouful language but had zero tolerance for racism. It's different here. I respect that. My main reason for wanting to mod is to make sure there's some clarity 'out back'. I'm not going to start banning people who kick my favourite hobby horse, my word on that. I want free speech within the limits of what we all agree to and even handed fairness across the board.

Sounds good Smithy. Maybe all the potential global moderators can make a declaration such as yours and put them in a special place for reference later if they fall off the wagon.

I also think Annie would be a good global mod, but global moderators have to consider relaxing their idealogy if they're to be fair to everyone.

Then there's Mozzaok - I didn't know he'd left. Maybe it would take 5 global moderators to replace one Muso?  Roll Eyes

Well said Grey.

Ultimately it is up to FD of course. I'm just thinking of how some of the other members might feel with an avalanche of global mods thrust upon them.

One thing in  favour of a cadre Smiley of mods is with regard to the issue of multiple threads on the same topic Mantra.

Multiple threads are silly time wasting and ego driven. They slow down the converation and make for repetativeness. But once a thread gets a few hits it's hard to close. With more mods we can address that problem, which will make the conversation more interesting and take less time to keep track of.

If we all agree on the premiss of course Smiley

Well with 99% of posters I interact with a simple appeal to their integrity would suffice.

"Your smarter than that why would you make yourself look so stupid?"

But thinking about it I can do that anyway now with the quote button.
I come here to talk politics, be a bit of a smart arse if the opportunity presents itself and have a bit of fun and from seeing a few things the "Moderator" tag seems to change that into sort of a referee of personality clashes & being baited Sad

I've posted for many years and maybe because yahoo was sheltered or something, but have rarely seen anything I would bother with and only 2 things here, ironicaly in the past month, the assassination callls and another where someone was called a scrag.

I formally withdraw from the running.

If you really want a cartel of mods I'd rccommend DNA, you won't find anyone more highly respected.

Smithy - I think  you show a lot of sense in what you say.  I reckon you'd do well.  The same goes for Grey, Perceptions_now and Annie Anthrax. All are reasonable people.

The main things is that no matter how much certain remarks rile you, the board rules are the final arbiter.  Even though I can't stand racism, I found that I had to just stick by the board rules - and the rules are actually quite reasonable in that respect.   The thing that takes time is communication, but the more mods you have, the more important it will be.

So you'll find that you don't have much latitude outside the board rules.

I can see why you might withdraw, but please withdraw your withdrawal Smiley

I'd have to read them first, I haven't quite made it to that page yet Wink
