I agree with this. As we go deeper into the recession/depression people will trend toward cottage industry and small community groups where they can exchange/barter for their daily needs.

It's a good system that worked well in the past. I'm not saying it will be a system that the western world would take on long term, but at least until paper money loses its appeal, or loses its position in the scheme of things.

It might be fanciful, but I can see us going back to small communities where we pull together more, where we help and support each other.

The planet can no longer support the wastefulness that we have got used to over the last 50 years. The throw away world of today will be replaced by a recycle/reuse world. We might even start making things that can be fixed when they break down instead of being dumped into third world countries.

One thing for sure, we can't keep going/growing as we have been.

pansi they probably said that 100 years ago.. we are most definately in the fastlane and I doubt theres any turning back however we do need to teach basic fundamentals.. like value..treat everything especially money with value...when we talk about a throw away world.. we also throw away money.. its incredible to see the trash we buy in the name of musthaves..it is soon discarded for the next model..I know someone who has 4 mobil phones... WHY??.. we are now paranoid if we leave a room withought a phone..yet for the most part we dont even use it to speak to each other..

we are spending billion on a communication system NBN that will make it even less of a bother to leave ones house... it will even monitor the chronically sick I am led to believe..well thats a lot to look forward too.

I think!

I don't think we will turn back to pre electronic age. I think we will go through a phase of slowing down and taking a look at what's more important in life.

People are working harder and longer and are much unhappier.

Why?

I think it's the exponential dollar chasing that is causing so much stress. The never ending competition for better, bigger, more expensive stuff.

Anyway, I also have another completely opposing scenario that could come out of the Great Disruption.

Governments are getting more controlling as people are protesting.

It could get to the point where people only interact with each other via the computer. People might become more isolated and live in a fantasy land of facebook etc. where they are safe from the harm of undemocratic government intervention/strict regime.

I do expect that peaceful assembly will be a crime of terrorism in the future. They are trying to get it passed in America, and we will surely copy.

Anyway all ideas are good, even 'out there' ones.

yes, and your economic strategy is stuffing your face with bacon grease so you can get on the DSP for obesity.  How can you possibly delude yourself that is a sound strategy?

Therefore, I am!

However, there are few other certainties in life!

Whilst many things may seem apparent and even guaranteed truths, at a particular point in time, we should not assume that they are, because it may or may not, happen the way we, they or it, is envisaged!

That said, at this point in time, the odds are growing (quickly), that WE can't keep growing exponentially OR even for the next decade or two?

I would suggest that the "throw away world", may soon be thrown away, as WE ARE NOW QUICKLY APPROACHING LIMITS OF NATURE, WHICH CAN NOT BE IGNORED!

And, along with that, will come many changes, including Economic & Political.

I threw out my nice brushed steel blue light electric kettle yesterday, it'd just stopped working. That's the second for the year, at work we're on the sixth. the last one tripped out all the 'puters.

I remenber when electric jugs were china and lasted forever, unless you burnt them dry and even then you could just buy a new element. Cooking water, it's not rocket science.  Sad

You still see those old crockery jugs in op shops and at garage sales, but I don't think you'd find an element anywhere now.

I haven't had an electric kettle last for the 12 months yet. I was sick of getting a new one every six months, so now I photocopy the receipt, keep the box and get a new one every time it 'blows'.

Remember the tv and video machine repair shop?......gone, chuck it and buy a new one, and the junk piles up.

We can't make things that last, that won't keep the wheels of production turning.

they are having fail after fail to save the euro, we need to be looking towards a post globalized economy when - not if the share market collapses.  Shareholders should be excluded from the reconstruction of the economy and made to get a useful skill or find work.  I don't want to see any form of organised corporate greed and economic aggression parasitism tolerated when their system goes pair shaped.  engaging in shareholder trading or gambling rackets should be criminalized.
