I agree with this. As we go deeper into the recession/depression people will trend toward cottage industry and small community groups where they can exchange/barter for their daily needs.
It's a good system that worked well in the past. I'm not saying it will be a system that the western world would take on long term, but at least until paper money loses its appeal, or loses its position in the scheme of things.
It might be fanciful, but I can see us going back to small communities where we pull together more, where we help and support each other.
The planet can no longer support the wastefulness that we have got used to over the last 50 years. The throw away world of today will be replaced by a recycle/reuse world. We might even start making things that can be fixed when they break down instead of being dumped into third world countries.
One thing for sure, we can't keep going/growing as we have been.
pansi they probably said that 100 years ago.. we are most definately in the fastlane and I doubt theres any turning back however we do need to teach basic fundamentals.. like value..treat everything especially money with value...when we talk about a throw away world.. we also throw away money.. its incredible to see the trash we buy in the name of musthaves..it is soon discarded for the next model..I know someone who has 4 mobil phones... WHY??.. we are now paranoid if we leave a room withought a phone..yet for the most part we dont even use it to speak to each other..
we are spending billion on a communication system NBN that will make it even less of a bother to leave ones house... it will even monitor the chronically sick I am led to believe..well thats a lot to look forward too.
I think!
I don't think we will turn back to pre electronic age. I think we will go through a phase of slowing down and taking a look at what's more important in life.
People are working harder and longer and are much unhappier.
Why?
I think it's the exponential dollar chasing that is causing so much stress. The never ending competition for better, bigger, more expensive stuff.
Anyway, I also have another completely opposing scenario that could come out of the Great Disruption.
Governments are getting more controlling as people are protesting.
It could get to the point where people only interact with each other via the computer. People might become more isolated and live in a fantasy land of facebook etc. where they are safe from the harm of undemocratic government intervention/strict regime.
I do expect that peaceful assembly will be a crime of terrorism in the future. They are trying to get it passed in America, and we will surely copy.
Anyway all ideas are good, even 'out there' ones.
