The no swearing rule is infantile.

Swearing is part of language. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the use of swear words when they are used in a non-abusive manner purely for effect. They only overstep the mark on forums such as this when they are used to abuse another member.

As for the reasoning that the use of swear words show a limited use of vocabulary, I'd argue the complete opposite; that the judicious use of swear words indicates a more complete grasp of the language.

Swear words are in such common useage that a ban on them here is infantile - especially considering the amount of abuse on here that goes on without any form moderation (and you reckon swearing is more worthy of correction?).

I concur.  I usually try to avoid the swears, as I think you can be more 'incisive' without them, but sometimes, they are the right words for the job.  We've all heard them before, we know what they mean.  Banning them outright doesn't help anyone.

But that's the rules and you read them and agreed to them before you signed up.

Do you have rules at work? most companies do.

Does the local pub have rules? no bare feet or uncovered hairy chests? they usually do.

That's life.

Whatcha gonna do boys?

Make this thread.

You're always banging on about how you protest against this or that. I'm just protesting against this.

A good point repeated.....

Take this whichever way you want.....

I swear. Often. OK, all the time.

I'm fluent in 'Strine'.

I also moderate (not here).

A string of invective, I WILL tolerate.

UNTIL it's aimed, personally, at a fellow poster.

I DO tolerate the old 'Someone should
kill (Gillard, Abbott, Howard, me), but will
NOT tolerate specifics.

You mob have been screaming for a fair moderator?

You're reading him, but I wouldn't moderate here
if my life depended on it.

Love the site, but you'd have to be mad to mod it'.

You do realise that people have ended up in front of a court for doing just that?

Inciting violence against named individuals - which statements such as that are - is against the law.

Just because they're famous doesn't mean they're excluded. All you need is for one person to pass on the post to the local cops and suddenly you've got them contacting the site admin for IP details. Most often it just results in being told to take the post down and for the offender to get a knock on the door and get a warning, but in a couple of cases I know of it's resulted in both the offender and the site owner having a date in court.

You can't 'swear' on the ABC message boards. But swearing is common on all ABC programmes except 'play school'. It's an attitude that's hypocritical, and absurdly out of touch.

On the other hand some people are more offended by vulgar words than vulgar thoughts. I wouldn't want to drive anybody away because I said a naughty word. I moderate my language here and in real life according to whom I'm speaking too. I see no point in moderators interferring if I'm having a 'conversation' with say Imperium. On the other hand if some attention seeking sadie started off a thread with a paragraph of expletives the 'Law' comes in useful.

In both cases a good behaviour bond for the posters involved. The site admins escaped charges being laid because it was proven that the site was unmoderated during the time the posts were up.

I'll have a look later if I can google anything about them. There was a reasonably well publicised case a few years ago of a union run forum where threats were made by a poster which resulted in that poster fronting a court.

Yahoo7 was often having the cops inquiring about post details/IP information.

There was a case sometime ago where an exec of a listed company hunted down a poster on the trading forum, Hot Copper, and successfully brought a case against the forum member and won.

It does happen.

Another forum in the states, Overgrow, was shut down by the Feds because posters continued to post threats about George W. Bush.  Ecehlon is alive and well.
