Aisha Gaddafi Seeks Political Asylum in Israel

In a new statement attributed to Aisha Gaddafi, the latter demanded political asylum in Israel. This move comes out of fear that Algeria, where the daughter of the late Colonel Moamar Gaddafi is currently living, might deliver her to the new authorities in Libya for trial.

Three months ago, after the Libyan rebels seized control of Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Aisha Gaddafi fled to Algeria along with her mother and two of her brothers where she gave birth. The Algerian authorities let them in for “humanitarian” reasons.

Aisha Gaddafi has asked former U.S. attorney Nick Kaufman to initiate the necessary procedures in preparation for obtaining asylum in Israel. Aisha hired Kaufman, who is also an Israeli human rights activist, to represent her interests in a case she raised at the International Criminal Court of The Hague to inquire about the “hidden” circumstances of the murder of her father and brother.

According to the website The Yeshiva World News, one of Aisha Gaddafi’s friends in Europe stated that “she believes the only country where she will feel safe is Israel, and she is advancing efforts towards obtaining political asylum with the realization that her chances of receiving asylum are not particularly good.”

A month ago, Aisha Gaddafi called upon the remaining militia in Libya to topple the new Libyan regime. This statement angered the Algerian authorities which gave way to Aisha’s fear of being deported, especially that her residence in Algeria is only for a limited time.

The choice for Israel as a refuge is no surprise to Arab nations who were always concerned about the Jewish background of the slain Colonel Gaddafi whose grandmother is alleged to be an Israeli of Libyan descent.
