O'Farrell vows to fix killer highway
January 8, 2012

The shocking scene after the highway collision in which the driver of a utlity and a teenage boy in a Urunga home were killed.

The shocking scene after the highway collision at Urunga in which the driver of a utlity and a young boy sleeping in his home died.

A speed camera was recently removed on the Pacific Highway near the site where a truck slammed into a house on this morning, killing two people.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell said that the camera at Urunga, on the NSW mid north coast, was one of a number that had been removed as a result of a report from the state's Auditor-General.

"Let's not get ahead of outselves here," he told reporters. "Let the police do their work, see whether it was speed, see whether it was human error or another factor."

Mr O'Farrell said the crash, which killed a ute driver and an 11-year-old boy asleep in his bedroom, had been another tragic accident on a notorious road that needs upgrading. Seven other people were taken to hospital.

Mr O'Farrell said both the state and federal governments were determined to fix the Pacific Highway in Urunga on the mid north coast.

"We put additional funding in last year's budget to ensure that ... we finally get a dual carriageway on the Pacific Highway. It can't come soon enough," he said today.

"The federal government has set a time frame of 2016. I think that's going to be tight but we've certainly put dollars on the table."

He said planning for a Urunga bypass is underway.

"This stretch of road is having planning work done for its upgrade and that upgrade could start within the next two years," Mr O'Farrell said.

"We represent all the seats along the highway, members of my team have lived with the deaths, the injuries this road has caused for too long."

Mr O'Farrell said he would visit the area if necessary.

"This should be used as a reminder of the dangers of driving on country roads."

The B-double truck and the ute collided on the Pacific Highway at Urunga, south of Coffs Harbour, before hurtling off the road and smashing into the house about 5am.

The driver of the ute, aged in his 20s, and an 11-year-old boy sleeping in his bedroom were killed.

Well to be fair..it really IS a failure on both sides of politics...both state AND federal...

That stretch of the Pacific Highway has been bad for over 20 years...

SO, Tony Abbott is out of line!

Is that about the strength of it Mr Slow?

Road crash hysteria.

On average three people die nationally on the roads a day.

If you buy the "one death is one death too many" argument you're an idiot. Accept that there will be deaths on the road, be thankful there's much less of them than there used to be and don't get your knickers in a knot everytime there's a fatality or three that gets the media's attention.

Start buying into the "it's an unacceptable problem" thing and before you know it you'll be doing 5kph with one of your kids walking in front of you with a red flag.

Yeah..that's really the point though...a labor PM established the idea....and NO federal or state government has done anything about it.....

Gough, we'll give a paas on..cause he got kicked early...
BUT Mal Fraser, Bob Hawke, Paul Keating, John Howard, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard all need to share the blame too....NO party has clean hands on this subject....

Federal opposition leader Tony Abbott says completing upgrades to the Pacific Highway between Brisbane and Sydney is a bigger priority than the $50 billion National Broadband Network.

The comments come after a fatal crash claimed two more lives yesterday, including that of an 11-year-old boy, on a single-lane section of the notorious highway near Urunga, about 27km south of Coffs Harbour on the NSW mid-north coast.

If Abbott is "unfamiliar" with the truth, then Gillard is totally unaware of it. Which is why there is such a groundswell of indignation at her bringing in a Carbon Tax. To keep harping about Tony Abbott just shows how insecure the left is.
