Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is under fire after joking about the cruise liner disaster in which at least 11 people died off the Italian coast.

More than 20 people are still missing after the ship ran aground on rocks off the island of Giglio last Friday, and specialist divers are using explosives to blow holes in the hull in a desperate hunt for any survivors.

During an interview on Triple M radio in Adelaide this morning, Mr Abbott made light of the situation.

"This is a bit from left field mate, the captain of the Costa Concordia wants to know if you need any help with your boat policy?" the Triple M announcer said.

"Well, that was one boat that did get stopped, wasn't it," Mr Abbot replied, to laughter.

It is really 'good ol Aussie humour'...
Think how many dingo jokes there were, and how many Challenger Space Shuttle jokes....
We tend to make jokes about accidents all the time...

Under fire from the wowsers you mean, in which case they are ignored anyway.
It is clear that Abbotts response to an FM morning radio host's remark is nothing more than light hearted banter.
Two teaspoons of C-ment in your morning cocoa for a week will harden you up Precious, and make you a little less sensitive to an off the cuff remark. Smiley

There are plenty of jokes about the Costa Concordia going around Italy at the moment too.

Quote:
The captain of the Costa Concordia claims he is not guilty of homicide and has witnesses to prove he was nowhere near the passengers who died.

Ok, it doesn't translate well.

Q) Whats the quickest way off an Italian Cruise ship?

A) Follow the captain

Q) How are your drinks served on an Italian cruise liner?

A) On the rocks

When our captain faces court he will be in the dock
Which is more than we can say for his ship.

Did you hear about the Scotsmen that the divers found still at the bar of the Costa Concordia?

Their reply? -  F- off - we paid for "all inclusive"

Then there was the visitor to the Bridge who asked Schettino if he knew where he was going. He replied:

"Yes, off course"

It's the only cruise ship where the sauna is cold and the pool is at 90 degrees.

"This is the captain speaking. - On your left, you can see the beautiful stars of the Tuscan sky. On your right, you can see the ancient shipwrecks of antiquity.

The Restaurant of the Costa Concordia offers a wide range of side dishes.
