Western Women give birth incorrectly?
Feb 5th, 2012 at 8:22pm

You see it in the movies. Western women in the dleivery suit on their backs with their legs up and apart.
...then the cry from "DRUGS!!!" is heard.
Or the growing convenience for Caesarian is made.
Why this?
One English Doctor was shouted down for saying "Western Women need to toughen up in Birthing".

This goes with the fact that nearly every other culture practices giving birth with the woman on hands and knees or in any position where the baby isn't 'weighing down upon the spinal cord/column' and slowing 'against' gravity which results in more pain and complications.
Water Births have been a blessing but is still an ongoing learning curve.

So why do Western Women (USA/UK and any Australians who follow suit) still give birth on their backs? Is it along the lines with why the USA still practices inferior Imperial measurement>?
I say this having 'cleaned many a Delivery Suit' and a bit of 'talk research' with other staff.

So - thoughts?

How many births have you witnessed?

Women are encouraged to do what feels right for them, though it's rare for us to be able to experience a water birth in an Australian hospital unless we flat out refuse to leave a pool or bath used for labouring.

Most birthing rooms have a variety of props to make the process more comfortable - birthing stools, bean bags, tens machines as an alternative to other forms of pain relief etc.

I have a friend who delieved two daughters in a baby pool in her living room. I went to the hospital for both of mine, but I definitely felt able to make the choices that felt right for my body.

Yes, it does seem to have been 'over-medicalised' in many ways.  Once they assign you a due date, you're only "allowed" to go 2 weeks beyond that before they either induce with hormones or have a caesarean.  Never mind that the due date is just an estimate, and the baby will come out when it's ready.  there's even regular calls from medical groups to "ban home births" - a thinly veiled way of saying that doctors want to corner the market.

Speaking of caesareans, they shouldn't be optional, they should be performed ONLY when the situation warrants it.  "too posh to push" is a phrase that should never have become prevalent.

Doctors should know better than to have the woman lying on a bed to deliver - it's not biomechanically correct.  Smart or tuned-in women will get up and find a good position - usually squatting, but it's a bit hard to do that if you've opted for an epidural - which again, are offered too freely.

It's also a bit hard to do if you've been labouring for 23 hours or experiencing a long transition period.

Pain relief and other birthing decisions (like caesars and home birth) should be left up to the woman experiencing the pain and birth. She should be given all the support and information she needs to make the best decisions for her baby and body.

Yes, Agreed.  But I think the pendulum has often swung too far in favour of 'her' and not 'her baby'.  You don't opt for a caesar if you are putting your childs welfare first.  With the increased recovery time required, you could also say you're not thinking of your own either - it is merely postponing the pain - and that cannot be stressed enough to anyone looking to opt for a casesarean.  But doctors get more money for performing surgery, so they have a conflict of interest.

Oh well.  I guess I'm just old fashioned in believing you should put your kids first.  Thank god for progress.

I agree with Honky Tonk.
I know us 'guys' will always be shouted down.
But having worked 'amongst' a Privatised Maternity Ward, even the 'Maternity Staff' would agree with me that it is too "Posh to Push" and its all about the 'easy access' of Caesarians (think Alien stomach eruption Cheesy) and drug inducements BEFORE any problems/needs arise.
I was born a month late. No probs.

Only recently has the Medical Industry gone back to 'promoting'  "Breast is Best" after a huge swing to the convenience of bottles straight away during the 80's and 90's. Throw in the fact that last year the majority of baby Bottles were banned for being that 'plastic' that has been banned everywhere else in the world.

They should design a special toilet-like birthing structure where the baby just falls into this hole (like with a toilet) and "plops down" into a pool of water like when you take a dump. Cheesy Grin

........... and then you press a button to flush it into the nurse's arms. Cheesy Grin

........... and whoooossshhh, bye bye baby, down the toilet it goes.

There exist many theories about giving birth. One does even say that women should feel pleasure and not pain when they're giving birth. I personally don't know which is the right way, but hey, I'm a guy after all Wink And I think women have to decide on their own which is the best option for them.

Women should feel pleasure when giving birth, like having sex?

Western women absolutely give birth incorrectly.
This isn’t a matter of debate, its simple science due to our anatomical design and the forces of nature.

The pelvic muscles are not built for that kind of pressure and it makes no sense at all when you could let gravity do all the work for you.

I cant help but think it was a religious idea, making women feel unneeded pain during childbirth..
It is a perfect example of devolution. We are an idiotic species.

I'm sure if you talk to most ladies that have given birth, you will find in-fact they were not in their backs, and if they did it was because its what they found most comfortable. These days woman are encouraged to get off the bed. Lets face it, labour is a learning experience, the more labours/births you have the better understanding you get from each one. My 2ND child's labour was much different to my first (in a better way).
Pain management is up to the lady.. we all have different pain tolerance.
As for C-Sections they shouldn't be optional. Only if need due to medical conditions or safer for the baby. I did have a friend ask her ONG for an elective C-Section and the doctor told her No Grin, he told her she has no need to have one and its not an easy way to get out of the labour process. HELLO its MAJOR surgery.

Yes. Women can have 'orgasms' when giving childbirth. I've been shown the clips - but I must add that all these clips were with women giving birth in warm baths or small heated pools, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it?

I've had at least two women tell me that by the 3rd child, giving birth is a 'pleasurable' experience.

I might be male - but, laying on the back with all the weight upon the spine is, well - silly. No wonder they have to resort to Alien births through the abdomen.

Probably explains the low birth rate for Whites.
Too painful (weight of baby on the spine), the need for pain relief drugs. The reliance on caesarian.
Contraceptives over generations altering fertility rates, the need for IVF and so on.

Wow… orgasm during birth?
Geez I missed out!  Grin
All I got was stitches as obstetrician did a cut for birth (episiotomy)
See… I remember that much!

Interesting about advice to not lay on back when sleeping because of pressure on lungs, spine etc
But when in hospital out come the stirrups as we lay on our backs.

I’ve seen special birthing seats where it’s like almost squatting to give birth.

I’ve always admired those water births.
But being in a hospital in case anything goes wrong is a priority!

Now that was way back in 1981 and 1983 for me… in recent decades I’ve seen full term pregnant women … not coming into hospital gripping with contractions (like I did) but just casually walking in to hospital at reception… getting ready to give birth when convenient via cesarean.

I just stopped to wonder why? Is their fanny canal not good enough?
There’s too many cesareans yeah?
Geez I’m only 150 cm tall and gave birth naturally to an 7 pound 8 ounce and later a 6 pound 8 ounce baby. I must admit… the smaller size baby was a lot easier.

My weird craving I had when pregnant was for chewing on ice…

I hate to say it Sophia. But when I asked midwife staff about why women have 'convenience' ceasarians? They would smirk and say it's to remain nice and tight for sexual pleasure. Shocked

The best way to give birth naturally on all fours (baby's weight is away from spine) or standing position with the aid of gravity for both.
One could guess that the many nations of women who do this with minimal or no pain relief are highly successful and have big populations via many kids.
Western women's method is very compromising to the birth process.
Don't need technology to be successful. But it seems western women are very dependent on it now... like a handicap needs a wheelchair.
