The funny thing is Big Red thinks this country used to be full of peaceniks. You know, the painters and dockers in Melbourne, Abe Saffron, Chicago mobsters and the various crime syndicates and casino operators in Sydney, the Queensland Police in Queensland - and all of them hooked up with their political backers: the Labor Party, the Liberal Party, the National Party, Bolte, Askin, and Joh.
They were simpler times. The real crims got off scott-free while some poor bastard in the wrong place at the wrong time got a talking to with the phone book and a typed up confession to sign.
Yeah, bring back the good old days, Red.
You left out Wran, Murphy and Grassby.
Now we have Hells Angels, Commancheros, Finks, Nomads, Bandidos, Coffin Cheaters, Notorious plus the muslims involved with drugs, car rebirthing, drive by shootings, extortion etc. Give me the old days anytime.
Grassby and Murphy were federal ministers. Nifty Nev - who knows? He seems to have gotten away with it.
The other premiers, however, received brown paper bags to look the other way and keep crime going. In the case of Joh, his ministers did.
Jesus - drive by shootings in places like Double Bay and Surry Hills were commonplace. Depending on who was involved, the cops left them alone. It went all the way to the top. In Sydney, this was the actual policing strategy (as Neddy Smith found out when he was granted the Green Light). You were either in with the cops, and okay, or on the outer, and dead before long.
This was the system of justice in NSW.
So when the old boy and others rail on about corruption in other countries, take it with a grain of salt. We used to be just as bad here - the good old days.
