Berlusconi loyalist Daniela Santanche, who attended the sentencing, denounced it as "an outrage, and a political sentence that has nothing to do with justice." But she also said that it should have no impact on the government.

Some political opponents, however, said Berlusconi, who has shaped political discourse in Italy for two decades, should withdraw from politics immediately.

Alessandro Di Battista, a lawmaker in the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement, said Berlusconi "must go to jail. It is outrageous that he is a senator that can make laws. Until he goes to jail, the country is not free." And the left-leaning governor of Apulia, Nicchi Vendola, said Berlusconi should "abandon public life."

Berlusconi does not have any official role in government, but he is a senator in Parliament and retains influence in the uneasy grand coalition between his forces and the center-left Democratic Party that emerged after inconclusive February elections. The Democratic Party issued a statement acknowledging the sentence and in support of the autonomy of the courts.

Berlusconi's high-stakes judicial woes are far from over. He faces a final appeal in a tax fraud conviction for which he has been sentenced to four years in jail and a five-year ban from office.

Roberto D'Alimonte, a political analyst for il Sole 24 Ore daily and professor at Rome's LUISS University, said the tax fraud conviction poses the more immediate threat since Italy's highest court is likely to rule before the statute of limitations runs out.

The sex-for-hire case "weakens him politically, but not that much, because we have seen that his voter base seems to be insulated from the impact of these sentences. We saw in the last elections, everyone thought he was dead, but he came back to life," D'Alimonte said.

While the verdict drew intense international media coverage, with half a dozen satellite vans parked outside the Milan courthouse, there was only a smattering of public interest. A few anti-Berlusconi protesters gathered outside, and just a handful of citizens joined journalists crammed inside the small courtroom.

"For 20 years, he's been running Italy. He's done what he wanted," said Aurelio De Boni, a retired suit salesman from Milan who attended the trial.

Neither Berlusconi nor el-Mahroug testified in this trial. El-Mahroug was called by the defense but failed to show, delaying the trial, and Berlusconi's team eventually dropped her from the witness list.

El-Mahroug, however, did testify in the separate trial of three Berlusconi aides charged with procuring prostitutes for the parties. She told that court that Berlusconi's disco featured aspiring showgirls dressed as sexy nuns and nurses performing striptease acts, and that one woman even dressed up as President Barack Obama.

El-Mahroug, now 20, said in the other trial that she attended about a half-dozen parties at Berlusconi's villa, and that after each, Berlusconi handed her an envelope with up to 3,000 euros ($3,900). She said she later received 30,000 euros cash from the then-premier, paid through an intermediary — money that she told Berlusconi she wanted to use to open a beauty salon, despite having no formal training.

But she denied ever receiving millions from the billionaire, as she had claimed to acquaintances, saying they were "lies" meant to inflate her own importance.

She was 17 at the time of the alleged encounters but passed herself off as 24. She also claimed she was related to then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Berlusconi's lawyers argued that he believed el-Mahroug was indeed Mubarak's niece, and he called police after she was accused of theft in a bid to avoid a diplomatic incident.

Berlusconi, who has been tried numerous times relating to his business dealings, has been convicted in other cases at the trial level. But those convictions have always either been overturned on appeal or else the statute of limitations has run out before Italy's high court could have its say.

The sex-for-hire case is the first involving his personal conduct.

Later this week, Italy's highest court has scheduled a hearing on Berlusconi's appeal to a verdict ordering him to pay 560 million euros ($800 million) to a rival media group over corruption in the acquisition of the Mondadori publishing empire. And a preliminary hearing will begin in Naples to decide if Berlusconi should be tried for allegedly bribing a lawmaker to bolt a previous center-left government under Romano Prodi and join his party, a move that weakened Prodi's slim majority.

THE director and deputy director of the Vatican bank have resigned amid a sweeping probe of the scandal-hit institution.
Paolo Cipriani and Massimo Tulli handed in their resignations "in the best interest of the institute and the Holy See", the Vatican said in a statement on Monday.
Their departures come three days after a senior Catholic cleric who held accounts at the bank, Nunzio Scarano, 61, was arrested in Italy for alleged corruption.
Cleric denies Vatican fraud charges
The shock resignation of top management comes amid a probe into the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), as the bank is known, carried out under the scrutiny of Pope Francis himself.
The IOR, which does not lend money, manages assets of 7 billion euros ($A10 billion) and handles funds for Vatican departments, Catholic charities and congregations as well as priests and nuns living and working around the world.
Bank president Ernst von Freyberg said that since 2010, "the IOR and its management have been working hard to bring structures and processes in line with international standards against money laundering".
"While we are grateful for what has been achieved, it is clear today that we need new leadership to increase the pace of this transformation process," he said.

The Vatican said von Freyberg would "assume the functions of the General Director ad interim with immediate effect" and a new position of "chief risk officer" would be created to help the bank comply with international financial regulations.
The bank has a troubled history, including the collapse of the Banco Ambrosiano, in which the Holy See was the main shareholder, and which had been accused of laundering money for the Sicilian mafia.
The chairman of Banco Ambrosiano, Roberto Calvi - dubbed "God's Banker" in the press - was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London in 1982 in a suspected murder by mobsters.
In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI created a new financial authority to reform the bank, with the aim of getting the Vatican on a "white list" of countries that cooperate with efforts against money laundering drawn up by the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Critics said his approach was toothless and many had been hoping Francis would overhaul the highest rungs of the institution.

In a bid to tighten control of the bank's activities, the pope last week set up a five-member commission, which is under orders to investigate the bank and report anything it uncovers directly to him.
In the latest scandal to hit the Vatican, police on Friday arrested senior cleric Nunzio Scarano on suspicion of plotting to smuggle millions of euros into Italy.
Scarano is accused of planning - with an Italian spy and a financial broker - to secretly fly 20 million euros in dirty money into Italy from Switzerland, purportedly as a favour for shipping industry friends.
The cleric, who had worked for years as a senior accountant for the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) and is currently being held in Rome's Regina Coeli prison, pleaded his innocence and requested to be transferred to house arrest or somewhere he can celebrate mass.

British police reopen Madeleine McCann case with 38 'persons of interest'

BRITISH police are opening their own investigation into the 2007 disappearance of toddler Madeleine McCann in Portugal and have identified 38 "persons of interest" across Europe.
A two-year review of the original Portuguese investigation, which is officially closed, had resulted in some new evidence, said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood of Scotland Yard, the officer in charge of the probe.
Police also still believe that Madeleine, who was three when she disappeared, may be alive, he said.
"We have identified 38 persons of interest from a number of European countries. Twelve of those people are UK nationals who we believe were in Portugal at the time Madeleine disappeared," Insp Redwood said.
"The inquiries that we seek to undertake will be to understand more about what role if any they played in Madeleine's disappearance."
Neither Madeleine's parents Gerry and Kate, nor the friends who were having dinner with the McCanns when she disappeared, were among the suspects, he said.
The McCanns said it was a "huge step forward" in their ongoing search for their daughter.
The couple launched a global campaign to find Madeleine after she vanished from the family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz on Portugal's south coast in May 2007, while they were eating dinner nearby.
Pictures of the smiling blonde girl were plastered on newspapers, posters and websites across the world, although numerous possible sightings came to nothing.
Scotland Yard said they believed she was still alive.
"There is no clear definitive proof that Madeleine McCann is dead and so on that basis I still genuinely believe that there is a possibility that she is alive, and so I would ask the public to continue to look for her," Insp Redwood said.
Since the ongoing review was launched in 2011, British police have gathered more than 30,000 documents, visited Portugal 16 times, carried out new witness interviews and generated new theories.
"The review has given us new thinking, new theories, new evidence and new witnesses," Redwood said.
"That has given us the ability to see this case with fresh eyes, and through that bring out new, genuinely new, lines of inquiry."
He added: "I believe critically that this is an important moment for Madeleine."
In April, Portuguese authorities said they had no new evidence that would give them cause to reopen their own inquiry.
But Insp Redwood said his team had a "positive" relationship with their Portuguese colleagues and had requested their help through official channels in chasing up new leads.
British police have also been in touch with a number of European countries about the so-called "persons of interest".
"Over the coming months we will be conducting assertive enquiries, with the assistance of host countries, to establish more information about the individuals concerned and any potential involvement," the Scotland Yard statement said.
The McCanns, who are both medical doctors, welcomed the new police investigation.
"They see it as a huge step forward in establishing what happened and hope that it will lead to bringing to justice whoever was responsible for Madeleine's abduction," their spokesman said.
Police have regularly released computer generated images of what she may look like now - Madeleine would have celebrated her ninth birthday last month.
And the McCanns, who themselves were suspected at one point in the Portuguese investigation, have never given up hope of finding her alive.
On the fifth anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance last month, Gerry McCann said: "We're probably more hopeful now than at any point in that last five years."

(Vatican Radio) To the joy of Vatican City State workers, Friday morning Pope Francis was joined by Pope emeritus Benedict XVI in the gardens for a ceremony during which the Holy Father blessed a statue of St Michael Archangel, at the same time consecrating the Vatican to the Archangel’s protection.



Following a brief ceremony, Pope Francis addressed those present noting how St. Michael defends the People of God from its enemy par excellence, the devil. He said even if the devil attempts to disfigure the face of the Archangel and thus the face of humanity, St Michael wins, because God acts in him and is stronger:



"In the Vatican Gardens there are several works of art. But this, which has now been added, takes on particular importance, in its location as well as the meaning it expresses. In fact it is not just celebratory work but an invitation to reflection and prayer, that fits well into the Year of Faith. Michael - which means "Who is like God" - is the champion of the primacy of God, of His transcendence and power. Michael struggles to restore divine justice and defends the People of God from his enemies, above all by the enemy par excellence, the devil. And St. Michael wins because in him, there is He God who acts. This sculpture reminds us then that evil is overcome, the accuser is unmasked, his head crushed, because salvation was accomplished once and for all in the blood of Christ. Though the devil always tries to disfigure the face of the Archangel and that of humanity, God is stronger, it is His victory and His salvation that is offered to all men. A Milan court has found three of Silvio Berlusconi's associates guilty of procuring prostitutes.

A MILAN court has found three of Silvio Berlusconi's associates guilty of procuring prostitutes - including the then underage Ruby - for racy parties held at the former Italian premier's villas.
Failed showbusiness agent Lele Mora and television host Emilio Fede were sentenced on Friday to seven years each in jail, while showgirl-turned-politician Nicole Minetti was given five years behind bars.
Among the girls allegedly recruited by the trio for parties at billionaire Berlusconi's villas was Moroccan-born Karima El-Mahroug, a then 17-year-old exotic dancer nicknamed "Ruby the Heart Stealer".
Berlusconi was sentenced in a separate trial in June to seven years in jail for paying for sex with Ruby and abusing his power to hide the liaison - though the punishment was suspended on appeal.
The Milan court on Friday banned Moro and Fede for life from holding public office and working with minors, while Minetti was given a five-year ban on holding public office.
All three were ordered to pay court costs.
In his summing up speech in May, prosecutor Pietro Forno said the three had arranged "orgies" at Berlusconi's mansion and cited the tycoon's ex-wife Veronica Lario, who accused her then husband of consorting with "young virgins".
His colleague Antonio Sangermano said the three were like "tasters of fine wine" and had obtained financial advantages from Berlusconi because "they know all the secrets" of those nights.
"They carried out a sort of exam of the capacities of the young women and then injected them into the circuit of soirees," Sangermano said. Minetti was also an active participant and "performed sexual acts for money," he said.
All three denied the charges, insisting that while they may have invited girls to the premier's Milan villas, it was to attend nothing more than elegant dinner parties.
