Netanyahu 1992: Iran will Have the Bomb by 1997

Posted on 03/06/2012 by Juan

Scott Peterson at the Christian Science Monitor did a useful timeline for dire Israeli and US predictions of an imminent Iranian nuclear weapon, beginning 20 years ago.

1992: Israeli member of parliament Binyamin Netanyahu predicts that Iran was “3 to 5 years” from having a nuclear weapon.

1992: Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres predicts an Iranian nuclear warhead by 1999 to French TV.

1995: The New York Times quotes US and Israeli officials saying that Iran would have the bomb by 2000.

1998: Donald Rumsfeld tells Congress that Iran could have an intercontinental ballistic missile that could hit the US by 2003.

Fear? Nah...

Iran is a pain in the butt to the big oil companies. In 2008 Iran helped with massive protests against secret sweetheart deals Exxon, Conoco, and Shell - with the help of Washington - foisted on Iraq. That killed thiose deals off and let China and Russia (partially) back in. Check out the 2009 round of contracts.

Iran have also helped stymie Israel's attempts to get hold of southern Lebanon, and in particular the Litani river, by helping arm Hezbollah. Iran has also helped Hamas in the past.

But the US and Israel can't very well complain to the UN and the wider world about all that, can they? lol

If they make enough predictions, there bound to get one right eventually. Smiley
Better than waiting until after a thermonuclear weapon sent from Iran has landed in Tel Aviv though to make a prediction cause that would be a bit silly really.
Or a few dirty bombs sent over from Hezbollah or Hamas landing in Israeli towns.
Because if that happens, all of the options Israel once had available, are instantaneously reduced to one option only.
Total war.

'US Army suicides jumped by 80% following Iraq invasion'

...
A father visits the grave of his son, who died while fighting in Iraq, at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia on September 10, 2011.

American military doctors say the number of suicides in the US Army jumped by 80 percent after the Iraq invasion.

Before 2003, the percentage of Army suicides was below civilian rates, but it started to climb in 2004, one year after the US-led invasion, according to the doctors’ analysis, which was expected to appear in the British journal Injury Prevention on Thursday.

In 2008, 140 Army servicemen committed suicide, a rate, which reflected an 80 percent increase from 2004, the article noted. The suicide rate was also a lot higher than that of the civilian society’s, it said.

"This increase, unprecedented in over 30 years of US Army records, suggests that 30 percent of suicides that occurred in 2008 may be associated with post-2003 events following the major commitment of troops to Iraq, in addition to the ongoing operations in Afghanistan," said the paper.

It noted that more than one-fifth of all active-duty troops suffered from some kind of mental disorder.

According to three different studies published in the American Journal of Public Health in January, many US military personnel and veterans are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or other consequences of deployment to war zones.

A study of almost 600 US veterans returning from Iraq or Afghanistan showed that nearly 14 percent of them were suffering from PTSD and 39 percent from probable alcohol abuse.

All the American troops, except for military contingents attached to the US Embassy in Baghdad and US consulates in the country, left Iraq in December 2011.

Washington launched the invasion in 2003 under the pretext that Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

However, later it was revealed that not only the former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, was not in possession of WMDs, but also that the US and UK leaders, who had defended the military action, knew about the non-existence of such weapons.

More than one million Iraqis were killed during the 2003-2011 invasion and subsequent occupation, according to the California-based investigative organization, Project Censored.

Interesting. Israel has been caught lying for 2 decades on this matter to get a regional competitor attacked, and your response is if they keep lying one day they may be right.

Since Israel predicted in 1992 that Iran would have the bomb by 1997, and its been 15 years since then, isn't it time to put this lie to bed?

Why would you think Iran would want to attack Israel if it hasn't already done it by now. Iran could unleash a pretty potent non nuclear attack now. What is stopping Iran now?

The memory of 1948, 1956, 1967,1973.
A 4-0 scorecard is etched in the memory.

Exactly. I sooo agree with you. Bomb them before it's too late.

It is better to bomb them than to add a date to that timeline showing when Iran got the bomb. i

You are forgetting the great victory of 2009, where the Israelis bravely battled the Gazan civilians armed only with the latest US military hardware, killing about 1200 civilians terrorists.
