Afghan president Hamid Karzai condemned the slaughter as "unforgivable" while US president Barack Obama called the shooting "tragic and shocking".

In a statement, Mr Karzai said the soldier entered the homes of civilians and killed 16 people, including nine children and three women.

It quoted a wounded 16-year-old, who was shot in the leg, as telling Mr Karzai by phone that the US soldier entered their home in the dark, woke up his family members and then shot them.

"The government and the people of Afghanistan demand an explanation from the United States government of this incident," Mr Karzai said.

"When Afghan people are killed deliberately by US forces this action is murder and terror and an unforgivable action," Mr Karzai said in statement.

An AFP reporter at the scene of the killings counted the bodies of 16 people, including women and children. In one house, an elderly woman screamed: "May God kill the only son of Karzai, so he feels what we feel."

One local woman, Gul Bashra, said her two-year-old child was among those killed in the shootings.

"They killed a child who was two years old," she said.

"Was this child a Taliban? Believe me, I have not seen a two-year-old Taliban yet. There is no Taliban here. The Americans are always threatening us with dogs and helicopters during night raids."

Hillary Clinton will now rush to karzai with her carpetbags of "American goodies" and her crying towels. "I am sorry, oh so sorry", will be her lament.  Barak Hussein Obama may even prostrate himself  and beg for forgiveness from the Afghan people.

In the meantime,  the Pentagon generals will march out lockstep out from their offices to claim that 99.9% of their occupation soldiers really, really do love the natives over who they rule.

And, of course, the American people will wonder: "oh, dear God, why don't those Afghan people love us?"

But, what America will not do is disengage from Afghanistan.  The prevailing attitude of the pro-war Americans seems to be: "We conquered Afghanistan, and Afghanistan is ours".

Same old theater of insanity we have seen for over a decade.

Again NATO has shot itself in its foot. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned something similar about the burning of the Koran. However hard NObama and Klinton try to explain that they are fighting terrorism, that they "respect" the locals religious feeling in Afghanistan, etc  the results on the ground prove otherwise. Add to that that all the billions supposed to be spent on Afghanistan's "reconstruction" have mostly vanished in the hands of Karzai's puppet regime and their close friends, expect more riots from a populations already suffering from what could be classified 1000 times (probably more) worse than Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Not even a Scrooge McDuck ragtag army would shoot itself in its foot as NATO regularly does in Afghanistan.
