Canada decriminalizes prostitution

Great to hear, time to follow suit Australia

Ontario Court of Appeal greenlights brothels, sweeps aside many of Canada’s anti-prostitution laws

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/03/26/ontario-court-of-appeal-greenlights-brot...

Quote:
TORONTO – The Court of Appeal for Ontario has swept aside some of the country’s anti-prostitution laws saying they place unconstitutional restrictions on prostitutes’ ability to protect themselves.

The landmark decision means sex workers will be able to hire drivers, bodyguards and support staff and work indoors in organized brothels or “bawdy houses,” while “exploitation” by pimps remains illegal.

However, openly soliciting customers on the street remains prohibited with the judges deeming that “a reasonable limit on the right to freedom of expression.”

The province’s highest court suspended the immediate implementation of striking the bawdy house law for a year to allow the government an opportunity to amend the Criminal Code.

I thought prostitutuion was already legal in Australia? As long as the brothel has council approval and the location meets certain guidelines ít's not illegal ... what is illegal is the girls on the street ....

When politicians offer you something for nothing, or something that sounds too good to be true, it's always worth taking a careful second look.

In Australia, prostitution laws vary from state to state. ‘Street work’, which involves soliciting whilst walking along a street or waiting at a street corner, is illegal in all states except New South Wales.

Brothels are legal, providing the owner has a permit from local government, in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania and one-woman brothels are permitted in the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland and Western Australia.

However, receiving money for prostitution in a brothel is prohibited in South Australia and allowing premises to be used as a brothel is an offence in the Northern Territory.

On the other hand, procuring the services of a prostitute is illegal in all states except Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory, which only prohibit clients of underage prostitutes.
