Thinking is bad for some religion. Not so for Religious Naturalism or Buddhism.

And also keep the priesthood rich. However, there have always been a vast number of reasons for religion having the power it does. One of them, seldom examined, is our species brain being prone to ‘religious experiences’. Many organised religions have understood this only too well. Consider the Russian Orthodox practice of placing believers in a totally darkened cathedral to celebrate the ‘resurrection’. When all the believers are assembled they light candles, incense (a psychoactive) is burnt and the choir erupts in song. The congregation having fasted for a week or so are even more likely to ’see God’.

It was a science of Writing (at first used for science and logistics) that 'created' God (Religion) via Zarathustrianism from which the 3 sons: Judaism, Christianity and Mohommedism 'evolved'.

Religion is a Middle-Eastern creation:
Judaism is themed on Asia (Holy City)
Christianity is themed on Europe (Holy Ghost)
Mohommedism is themed on Africa.(Holy Land)
All three are 'interpretations' (via Writing/Books) of these Regions - but they are not the 'living myths' of these Regions.

Asia defied Religion from the Middle-East, by creating its own version of moral code in Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism, etc.

Religion kept Africa in the dark (continent) down in the southern hemisphere and thus called them 'Primitives' because of it.

Religion oppressed the Europeans with Christianity.
Now Germany has thrown the old oppression off and back to the Middle-East and returned to its older truer European nature of Music and Medicine.
France, Italy will do the same and Britain - the most durable servant of Religion from the Middle-East, will have to do the same.

North America, Australia and South America are the heirs of Religion from the Mid-East.
Not Africa, Asia and Europe - who serve Science of Oceania.

...also, Life began deep below in the 'darkness' of the depths. God did not create 'life'.
The other factor of Religion being 'Heaven' based is also a flaw.
Might as well say all Aviation Pilots are Angels of God and all Submersible (Divers) Pilots of the Depths are servants of Satan (Poseidon, etc).
See the 'stupidity' and flaw of this and the flaw of Religion too.

Do you really think the crusades, witch hunts and Spanish Inquisition "civilised" Europeans?
Europeans became civilised DESPITE religion.
It is a common stated myth from theists that without religion there would be no morality.
Human's have an inate sense of right and wrong. They don't need a book to tell them how to behave. Indeed quite often a religious book is used to justify quite horrific deeds.

Europeans were living in their Age of Faerie - which was an existence with 'Nature'. It was a harmonious Age where even the migration of Anglos and Saxons into Briton was a peaceful occurance regarding the already established native Britons (who were eventually out-bred to Wales and Cornwall). With the British Isles/Eire not having a permanent peoples until recently from just 6,000 years ago. Before that - it was comings and goings due to Ice Ages all the way through Neanderthals and Homo-Habilis and Erectus migrations.

The Age of Faerie for Europeans was much like the existence of North American Indians and the Clovis before them and Aboriginal Australians.

Of course, Religion from the Middle-East in the form of Christianity considered this European existence a 'PRIMATIVE' and uncivilised state of being. Even the Greek to Roman Age in Southern Europe was considered 'Barbaric' and thus Christianity - the Middle-East's ambassador and oppressor into Europe destroyed, condemned, enslaved and oppressed European peoples. Even the Briton 'fictional' story of 'Camelot' etc - was corrupted into a Christian affair.
Even the Norse bent the knee to Religion and the Age of Faerie and the Age of Gods fell to the Middle-Eastern God of Religion.

True but our species vulnerability to religious ‘groupthink’ is a far, far more complex problem manifested in ideological blindness as well as religious dogma. The underlying problems origin isn’t religion or ideology, it’s what we are as a species and our propensity to fall into the trap of tribal ‘thinking’ of all kinds.
Until we face up to the problem of what we are the many problems of religious and ideological madness will continue until we render ourselves extinct.
