'No way': US military bar RT’s video agency from media event in letter likely revealing too much

Published on Nov 17, 2016

An extraordinary email was received by a producer for RT’s video agency Ruptly following a request to attend one of the Pentagon's media events. Their “No way” was phrased in such a way that, one suspects, the US military official just hit the wrong "reply" button.

‘New form of segregation?’: Moscow reacts to US State Dept treatment of RT reporter

Published time: 17 Nov, 2016 18:41

The US State Department's recent comments toward an RT reporter during a briefing were "outrageous" and demonstrated that Washington divides the media "on an ideological basis," the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

At a US State Department briefing on Wednesday, when asked by RT reporter Gayane Chichakyan for facts to prove allegations that Russia is targeting hospitals in Syria, spokesman John Kirby said that he wasn't "going to put Russia Today [RT] on the same level with the rest of [the journalists] who are representing independent media outlets."

Moscow has now responded to the incident, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calling it "outrageous" and "revolting."

"Is this some new form of segregation? Dividing media on an ideological basis?" Zakharova said at a press briefing in Moscow on Thursday.

She also warned her colleagues in Washington that if they kept on treating RT and other Russian media outlets with disrespect, she would make sure US journalists working in Russia experience a similar attitude. The Foreign Ministry could arrange a “special place” for American journalists at briefings, Zakharova said, adding “I can deliver that.”

"I don't think that American journalists will be happy with such a scenario," Zakharova said.

The Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed that not all American diplomats found Kirby's remarks "normal," and some privately apologized and expressed their regret about the incident to RT representatives.

‘War against any alternative media’

On Thursday, US President Barack Obama appeared to weigh in on the issue as he spoke alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a press conference during his visit to Berlin.

“In an age where there is so much active misinformation, and it's packaged very well and it looks the same when you see it on a Facebook page or you turn on your television, where some overzealousness on the part of a US official is equated with constant and severe repression elsewhere,” Obama said, seemingly referring to the rant the US State Department spokesperson unleashed at RT’s correspondent.

Brian Becker of the anti-war ANSWER Coalition believes that by openly stating that State Department will not treat RT on par with “so-called free press,” Kirby said out loud what has long been the common attitude to alternative media in Washington.

“In fact, there’s a war going on, a war against any alternative media, in this case, the Russian media, because it’s effective and because millions of Americans are depending on it because they are sick and tired of the corporate-owned media,” Becker said.

“There is war with RT, there’s a war with Sputnik, there’s a war with Ruptly, not because it ‘weaponized’ information, but because it really is an alternative media source,” he added.

While Kirby advocated unequal treatment of RT’s correspondent and other journalists by saying that RT is not an independent news source because it receives funding from the Russian state, Becker argues that the US media living off big corporate money can in no way be considered “independent.”

“If you look at CNN, or MSNBC, or the Washington Post, or the New York Times or any of the independently – that is, corporate-owned – media in the United States they are all in echo chamber of US propaganda and that’s completely outrageous,” Becker said. He added that State Department does not expect challenging questions from US media outlets and that is why it mistook RT’s inquiry for “interference and disruption technique.”

“The Russian journalists, unlike most of the American journalists, actually ask for evidence,” Becker said.

The Debate - Partitioning Syria?

Published on Nov 21, 2016

Broadcast date: 11.21.2016

The UN Special Envoy for Syria Steffan De Mistura has met with Syria’s FM Walid Al-Mouallem, who said he thought there would be talks about resuming dialogue. Instead, Walid Al-Moallem said De Mistura focused on what he called 'ideas' for eastern Aleppo: local administration, in other words, autonomy, it can be called partition. Syria has totally rejected that, so has Iran.

In this edition of the debate, we’ll discuss whether that is UN’s best answer, and who is he supporting when he approaches Syria with that idea? Meanwhile, Turkey has called on the US, and its allies to reconsider a Syria no-fly zone.

Syrian govt forces liberate about 40% of east Aleppo from terrorists – Reconciliation Center

28 Nov, 2016

More than 3,000 civilians have left the eastern part of the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo in the last 24 hours, the Russian Center for Reconciliation said. It later reported that about 40 percent of the militant-held part of the city has been liberated.

Some 3,179 people, including 1,519 children – among them 138 newborn babies – have left Eastern Aleppo through the ‘humanitarian corridors’ set up by Syrian government forces, Russian Reconciliation Center said on Monday.

The center reported that 12 neighborhoods, comprising roughly 40 percent of the territory previously controlled by the militants, have been cleared.

According to the Russian Center for Reconciliation, more than 80,000 people live in the newly liberated areas of the eastern part of the city. It added that more than 5,000 people fled from the southern districts of eastern Aleppo, which are still controlled by the militants, to the areas held by government forces.

Earlier on Monday, the center reported that to date 10 neighborhoods and more than 3,000 buildings have been cleared of Al-Nusra Front militants. The militants have also been pushed out of al-Qadisiyah, a key Aleppo district.

All civilians are being cared for in aid camps where they receive medical treatment, food and sanitation.

The center said it deployed additional 150 field kitchens to distribute hot meals among civilians fleeing the embattled city.

More than 100 militants laid down their arms and left eastern Aleppo through the special corridors, the statement said.

Despite joint humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Syrian government and Russia, thousands of civilians are still kept in the eastern part of the city by militants. To minimize damage to the civilian population, the Russian and Syrian militaries suspended airstrikes and set up 'humanitarian corridors' for both non-combatants and militants willing to leave the area.

However, the corridors are vulnerable to militant small arms fire and shelling, which complicates the evacuation of civilians.

RT's Lizzie Phelan, reporting from Syria, said the government army's advance in the eastern part of Aleppo “has enabled civilians to leave the area,” and that there are thousands of people desperate to flee. Those who managed to escape told RT crew the militants deprived them of all means to survive, including food and water.

“The militants are lying, they are holding us there, even now they are holding families [in the area]. They don't let people go,” one man said.

“Every time we tried to flee they caught us and turned us back,” a young woman added.

In militants-held areas, shooting and death threats have become a common method to prevent people from fleeing.

“We wanted to leave, but they stopped us from doing so. They threatened to kill us, but we tried again and again. Finally, we escaped,” another Aleppo resident said.

Currently, the Syrian Army is continuing their large-scale offensive in eastern Aleppo, targeting Al-Nusra Front and other radical militants still controlling the area. The troops have already established control over important blocks and districts in the eastern part of the city.

SYRIA: The Israel Lobby Enforce ‘Caesar Bill’ to Increase Collective Punishment of Syrian People

November 23, 2016

Rick Sterling
Dissident Voice

Late in the day Tuesday November 15, Congress convened in special session.  With normal rules suspended, they passed House Resolution 5732 the “Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act”.  The resolution calls for intensifying already harsh sanctions on Syria, assessing implementation of No Fly Zone in Syria and escalating efforts to press criminal charges against Syrian officials.

HR5732 claims to promote a negotiated settlement in Syria but, as analyzed by Friends Committee for National Legislation, imposes preconditions which would actually make that more difficult.

There was 40 minutes of “debate” with six representatives (Royce, Engel, Ros-Lehtinen, Kildee, Smith, and Curbelo) speaking in favor of the resolution.  There were few other Congressional representatives present in Congress. The House Foreign Affairs Committee stated that the resolution was passed “unanimously” without mentioning the special conditions.

The “Non Controversial” Resolution that could lead to World War III

According to wikipedia “Suspension of the rules is a procedure generally used to quickly pass non-controversial bills in the United States House of Representatives ….such as naming Post Offices…”  In this case, the resolution calls for evaluating and developing plans for a “No Fly Zone” which is an act of war.  This is obviously controversial and it seems clear the resolution should have been debated and discussed under normal rules with a normal amount of Congressional presence and debate.

The motivation for bypassing normal rules and rushing the bill through without debate was articulated by the bill’s author and ranking Democrat Eliot Engel:

“We cannot delay action on Syria any further…. if we don’t get this legislation across the finish line in the next few weeks, we are back to square one.”

The current urgency may be related to the election results since Trump has spoken out against “regime change” foreign policy.  As much as they are critical of Obama for not doing more, Congressional neoconservatives are concerned about the prospect of a President who might move toward peace and away from war.

The Caesar Fraud

HR5732 is titled the “Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act”. Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Ed Royce (R-Ca) explained that the resolution is named after “the brave Syrian defector known to the world as Caesar, who testified to us the shocking scale of torture being carried out within the prisons of Syria.”

In reality, the Caesar story was a grand deception involving the CIA with funding from Qatar to sabotage the 2014 Geneva negotiations. The 55,000 photos which were said to show 11,000 torture victims have never been publicly revealed. Only a tiny number of photos have been publicized. However, in 2015 Human Rights Watch was granted access to view the entire set. They revealed that almost one half the photos show the opposite of what was claimed: instead of victims tortured by the Syrian government, they actually show dead Syrian soldiers and civilian victims of car bombs and other terror attacks! The “Caesar” story, replete with masked ‘defector’, was one of the early propaganda hoaxes regarding Syria.

False Claims that the US has been doing nothing

One of the big lies regarding Syria is that the US has been inactive. Royce says:

“The administration has decided not to decide. And that itself, unfortunately, has set a course where here we sit and watch and the violence only worsens. Mr. Speaker, America has been sitting back and watching these atrocities for far too long. Vital U.S. national security interests are at stake.”

The ranking Democrat Eliot Engel said:

“Four years ago I thought we should have aided the Free Syrian Army. They came to us in Washington and begged us for help… they were simply looking for weaponry. I really believe if we had given it to them, the situation in Syria would have been different today.”

This is nonsense. The US was actively coordinating, training and supplying armed opposition groups beginning in late 2011. When the Qadaffi government was toppled in Fall 2011, the CIA oversaw the theft of the Libyan armories and shipment of weapons to Syrian armed opposition as documented in the Defense Intelligence Agency report of October 2012.

These weapons transfers were secret. For the public record it was acknowledged that the US was supplying communications equipment to the armed opposition while Saudi Arabia and Qatar were supplying weaponry.  This is one reason that Saudi purchases of weapons skyrocketed during this time period; they were buying weapons to replace those being shipped to the armed opposition in Syria. It was very profitable for US arms manufacturers.

Huge weapons transfers to the armed opposition in Syria have continued to the present.  This past Spring, Janes Defense reported the details of a U.S. delivery of 2.2 million pounds of ammunition, rocket launchers and other weaponry to the armed opposition.

Claims that the US has been inactive are baseless. In reality the US has done everything short of a direct attack on Syria. And the US military is starting to cross that barrier. On September 17 the US air coalition did a direct attack on the Syrian Army in Deir Ezzor, killing 80 Syrian soldiers and enabling ISIS to launch an attack on the position. Claims that it was a “mistake” are highly dubious.

The claims by Congressional hawks that the US has been ‘inactive’ in the Syrian conflict are part of the false narrative suggesting the US must “do something” which leads to a No Fly Zone and full scale war. Ironically, these calls for war are masked as “humanitarian”.  And never do the proponents bring up the case of Libya where the US and NATO “did something”: destroyed the government and left chaos.

Congress as a Fact-Free House of Propaganda

With only a handful of representatives present and no debate, the six Congress members engaged in unrestrained propaganda and misinformation. The leading Democrat, Eliot Engel, said “We’re going into the New Year 2017, Assad still clings to power, at the expense of killing millions of his citizens.” That number is way off anyone’s charts.

Rep Kildee said “The world has witnessed this terrible tragedy unfold before our eyes. Nearly half a million Syrians killed. Not soldiers – men, women, children killed.”

The official text of the resolution says:

It is the sense of Congress that–

(1) Bashar al-Assad’s murderous actions against the people of Syria have caused the deaths of more than 400,000 civilians…

The above accusations – from “millions of citizens” to “half a million” to “400,000 civilians” – are all preposterous lies.

Credible estimates of casualties in the Syrian conflict range from 300,000 to 420,000. The opposition-supporting Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates the documented 2011-2016 death toll as follows:

1: Killed pro Syrian forces – 108,000

2: Killed anti government forces – 105,000

3: Killed civilians – 89,000

In contrast with Congressional and media claims, civilians comprise a minority of the total death count and the largest casualty group is those fighting in defense of the the Syrian state. These facts are ignored and never mentioned because they point to the reality versus the propaganda narrative which allows the USA and allies to continue funding terrorism and a war of aggression against Syria.

The Congressional speakers were in full self-righteous mode as they accused the Syrian government of  “committing crimes against humanity and war crimes against civilians including murder, torture and rape. No one has been spared from this targeting, even children.” A naive listener would never know that the Syrian government is primarily fighting the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda including thousands of foreigners supplied and paid by foreign governments.

The Congressional speakers go on to accuse the Syrian military of “targeting” hospitals, schools and markets. A critical listener might ask why they would do that instead of targeting the Al Qaeda terrorists and their allies who launch dozens and sometimes hundreds of hell cannon missiles into government held Aleppo every day.

The Congressional propaganda fest would not be complete without mention of the “White Helmets“.  House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce said:

“We (previously) heard the testimony of Raed Saleh of the Syrian White Helmets. These are the doctors, nurses and volunteers who actually, when the bombs come, run towards the areas that have been hit in order to try to get the injured civilians medical treatment…They have lost over 600 doctors and nurses.”

This is more Congressional nonsense.  There are no nurses or doctors associated with the White Helmets. The organization was created by the USA and UK and heavily promoted by a “shady PR firm”.  The White Helmets operate solely in areas controlled by Nusra and associated terrorist groups.  They do some rescue work in the conflict zone but their main role is in the information war manipulating public opinion.

The White Helmets [who falsely, and fraudulently go by the stolen official name of ‘Syria Civil Defense’] actively promote US/NATO intervention through a No Fly Zone.  Recently the White Helmets has become a major source of claims of innocent civilian victims in east Aleppo. Given the clear history of the White Helmets, these claims should be treated with skepticism. What exactly is the evidence?

[21st Century Wire Editor: Please also note the existence of the REAL Syria Civil Defence established 1953]

The same skepticism needs to be applied to video and other reports from the Aleppo Media Center. AMC is a creation of the Syrian Expatriates Organization whose address on K Street, Washington DC indicates it is a US marketing operation.

[21st Century Wire Editor: The Aleppo Media Centre is also funded by the French Foreign Office]

What is really going on?

RT News - December 06, 2016 (17:00 MSK)

https://www.rt.com/shows/news/369372-rtnews-december-06-17msk/

Children are among the injured, as militants shell  civilians in Aleppo - killing 8. That follows an attack on a Russian field hospital that was set up to help the victims of the daily shelling. Russia and China, meanwhile, have vetoed a resolution calling for a 7-day ceasefire in Aleppo - with Moscow pointing out that previous pauses have only enabled the terrorists to re-group and re-arm. Fake news is back, and this time in Britain - where an alarmist article claims Russian tanks were spotted on British soil in a quote "chillingly realistic wartime exercise," but the UK's Ministry of Defence admits the standard equipment used did NOT portray a Moscow attack.

Aleppo ‘opposition’ blocked humanitarian aid & held civilians ‘on some occasions’ – Kerry

Quote:
The US official said both Russian and Syrian governments had been “bombing the fighters” who are already “greatly outnumbered and outpowered.”

“They don't have airplanes, helicopters or large artillery,”
Kerry said. He also insisted that rebel and militant groups in Aleppo have been left without a choice “as to whether or not they want to stay or be able to leave safely.”

As thousands flee E. Aleppo, RT hears stories of those trapped there for years (VIDEO)

10 Dec, 2016

People who've been trapped in eastern Aleppo for years are now being reunited with their families. Some of them told RT’s Lizzie Phelan why they didn’t flee when the militants took over.

“Only strong men have a good chance of escaping rebel areas. It’s especially difficult for families, when you have kids they don’t allow you to leave,” local resident Ibrahim said. He told RT some families were simply unable to leave their children behind – if you have a boy of a fighting age, the terrorists simply won’t let you take him with you. And fighting age in militant-held Aleppo is just 14.

“Because I have a boy, they wouldn't let him leave with me. That’s why I stayed – because I have a boy. I stayed here for him. Thanks to God, today we were able to leave,” Ibrahim says.

Many of his neighbors say the militants had been trying to drive them away but they had to stay because their children were too small for such a journey.

“The rebels would constantly come to our home and steal our belongings, they would fire mortars at us to try to make us leave our homes, so they could come and steal our things, and frighten us because all our neighbors left but we stayed in our home. They would ask why we don’t leave: we told them we have many small children that we can’t leave. We have cows and sheep, we can’t leave them alone, they need to be taken care of, too,” a man called Jawaher explained.

Now, however, these people are finally free and say their biggest joy is to meet their relatives, who live in western districts, after so much time.

“I feel like its Eid [holiday], with the power of the Syrian Army we have victory. After five years I am with my family – I am so happy,” says young Salah, holding on to his brother.

Mohamad has come from western Aleppo to pick up Ibrahim, his brother, who was trapped in Sheikh Sa'eed district.

“Four years ago he couldn't escape, but I did. He was stuck there and thank God we are reunited now,” he tells our crew, meeting for the first time his two youngest nephews who were born in eastern Aleppo.

Another man, Mahmoud says he is free now, but he will wait for his brother in law, who was imprisoned by the militants after coming to eastern Aleppo to visit his wife.

“They put my sister's husband in jail, they put her husband in jail…because he was living on this side. He went to see his wife, and some people told them that he comes from this side; they caught him and put him in jail.”

For now, all these people are left to deal with what is left of their city after years of fighting. During their retreat, the militants littered the areas they fled with booby traps and mines. These are now being cleared by Russian Army bomb disposal specialists.

“In the past 24 hours, they demined a total area of 8 hectares. In addition, 24 buildings have been cleared from explosive objects, including one bakery, two schools, two mosques, one power substation, and some 4.5km of roads,” the Russian Center for Reconciliation said on Saturday.

New Israeli bombing at Damascus

8 December 2016

Following [its assault on] Lebanon, at around 3 am this morning, 7 December 2016, the Israeli army has bombed the military airport of Mezzeh (Damascus). The raid has only caused a minor fire.

For around three entire months since the beginning of the attempt to topple the Syrian Arab Republic and destroy the country, Israel has been bombing Syria. Tel-Aviv’s custom is claiming it is aiming at arm reserves which, it believes, are ready to be delivered to the Lebanese to fight it. However, Israel has failed to provide any justification for its most recent raids.

Generally speaking, the Israeli army has tended to intervene as a pro-Jahadi air support against Syria.

While from the outset, Israel had been penetrating the Syrian air space to strike its targets, today it is satisfied with either firing from its territory, or firing from planes flying illegally over Lebanese territory. Indeed, the Russian Federation has placed the S-300 anti-missile at Lattakia and has offered others to Syria. These missiles have the reputation of being able to destroy any aircraft.

Israel has been supporting and arming the Syrian terrorists.

They have learned nothing from USA's creation of Al Qaeda in the 1980s.

Islamic State reentered Palmyra after large-scale operation

Dec 11th, 2016

nsnbc : Forces of the Islamic State reentered the Syrian city of Palmyra on forcing Syrian troops to withdraw to the suburbs. The campaign against Palmyra was launched nine months after Syrian and Russian forces liberated the ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Islamic State columns launched coordinated attacks from the east, north and south of the city. ISIS threw an estimated 4,000 troops into the renewed battle for Palmyra. ISIS fighters also seized the Tar mountain, close to the Palmyra Citadel, west of the city, in tandem with shelling the citadel with mortar shells and heavy artillery.

A local source reports that ISIS gathered troops from Raqqa and Deir Ez-Zor to launch the attack. Losses, including heavy losses from fierce fighting have been reported on both sides. However, no official casualty figures from the standoff were released.

Syrian military forces are reportedly mustering stiff resistance from positions in te suburbs. The attack on Saturday was preceded by several attacks on military outposts in the area surrounding the city.

Syrian Air Forces flew several sorties around Palmyra city, targeting ISIS fighters. Clashes in and around Palmyra were still ongoing Sunday evening. Other ISIS attacks were launched against the Industrial City and Tallet al-Ameriyeh mountain in the countryside of Palmyra. Earlier on Sunday Syrian Arab Army (SAA) units fended off an ISIS attack in the surroundings of al-Tar Mountain and al-Ameriyeh town to the northeast of Palmyra.

There have been isolated reports about logistic air drops in support of ISIS by members of the U.S.-led coalition against the insurgents. Even though it is not impossible or unlikely that such air drops could have taken place, nsnbc has not been able to independently verify such reports.

1,217 Militants in Aleppo Surrendered, Thousands of Civilians Evacuated, Fighting Continues

Dec 10th, 2016

nsnbc : Syrian, Russian and allied forces have suspended most of their military operations against insurgents in the remaining “rebel-held” area in eastern Aleppo to facilitate the evacuation of more civilians and to give insurgents an additional opportunity to decide whether they want to surrender of continue a lost battle. However, sporadic fighting continued.

The Russian Defense Ministry, on Saturday, noted that military operations against insurgents in eastern Aleppo had been suspended to facilitate the evacuation of non-combatant civilians. The pause in combat operations also gave insurgents an additional chance to lay down their arms. Insurgents had been given the choice to evacuate to other “rebel-held” areas. Syrian citizens were also given the opportunity to surrender to have their status settled, be granted an amnesty and to return to a normal life.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov stated that “More than 20,000 residents left eastern Aleppo in the first part of Saturday, and 1,217 militants laid down their weapons.” No details about the exact whereabouts of those who surrendered were provided. The evacuation was monitored by drones and webcams and broadcast life. Remaining insurgents are holding on to about ten percent of the area of Aleppo they controlled about three weeks ago.

nsnbc could not independently verify that 20,000 have been evacuated, but an nsnbc correspondent located in Aleppo confirmed that “a substantial number of civilians were evacuated to relatively safe places such as makeshift evacuation centers in the Jebrin area. nsnbc’s correspondent noted that “the 20,000 mentioned in some State media reports appear strongly exaggerated and that the number of those who were evacuated on Saturday is closer to about 5,000 – 6,000 persons. Last week the International Committee of the Red Cross commented that some 30,000 civilians had fled eastern Aleppo to government-controlled areas. Russian officers in Aleppo are also coordinating aid efforts with the Red Cross, the Red Crescent and other internationally recognized aid organizations.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Russian Reconciliation Center said the Russian mine disposal experts continue their work alongside the engineering members within the Syrian army to clear liberated areas in the eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo. The Center noted that mines have been removed in an area of 8 hectares, while explosive devices have also been removed from 24 buildings, bakery, two schools, two mosques, power stations and 4.5 km of roads.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also said that the decision for taking all of Aleppo has been taken, adding that the army recapture of rebel-held areas in Aleppo will change the course of the battles in Syria. The Syrian government also strongly condemned the United States’ decision to legalize the increased transfer of weapons to “rebels” in Syria under the banner of fighting terrorism. It is noteworthy that the U.S. administration has not published any details about how exactly it wants to monitor whom exactly it transfers weapons to and which mechanisms it will put in place to assure that these weapons would be used in the “fight against terrorism”.

Aleppo militants safe passage deal with US unreal: Russia

Dec 11, 2016

Russia has denied claims made by militants that it has reached an agreement with the US over giving the terrorists safe passage out of Syria’s Aleppo.

On Sunday, Aleppo militants told Reuters that Moscow and Washington had tabled a proposal aimed at granting the remaining militants in Aleppo and their families passage out of the city.

Following the announcement, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the militants' claims were fictitious, adding that Moscow is currently working towards the establishment of the required conditions for the safe extractions of civilians from Aleppo.

"The issue of withdrawing militants is the subject of separate agreements. This agreement has not yet been reached, largely because the United States insists on unacceptable terms," said Ryabkov.

He noted that talks between the US and Russia would carry on in Geneva.

The Syrian government has been making advances in militant-held areas in eastern Aleppo, with recent reports saying that the military and its allies have managed to retake two-thirds of the territory that used to be under the control of the militants.

According to Reuters, militant officials had claimed that the Syrian government would issue public guarantees pertaining to the safety of militants attempting to leave Aleppo.

It would also mandate members of the terrorist group formerly known as al-Nusra Front to head towards the Syrian northwestern province of Idlib, but militants from other groups could go to other regions, including the Turkish border.

The plan was also said to be carried out within 48 hours under the observation of the United Nations. According to the plan, the militants would also be allowed to take their light arms with them.

Syria forces continue to purge Aleppo

Since it began its offensive to retake the divided city of Aleppo in mid-November, the Syrian government has retaken over 93 percent of the city, which was once divided between the militants and the government.

On Sunday, Syrian forces retook the militant-held neighborhood of Maadi and several of its surrounding districts, said a UK-based monitoring group.

Earlier, they liberated Asila and Aajam districts, southeast of Aleppo's ancient citadel, as well as the southern regions of the Karam al-Da’ada neighborhood.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that over 10,000 civilians were able to flee militant-held areas as the government forces progressed over the last 24 hours.

78,000 civilians escaped Aleppo since November

Since the operations began to liberate the city, 78,000 civilians have successfully been evacuated with the aid of Russian Center for Reconciliation, says Moscow.

“Over the past night, 2,124 civilians, including 1,007 children, were evacuated from the militant-held areas of Aleppo, with help from the Russian Center for Reconciliation. Some 291 militants laid down their weapons and crossed into the western part of the city to surrender to Syrian government troops,” said Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov.

“Currently, the Russian Center for Reconciliation, through humanitarian corridors near Karim El-Hun and Mahayar, has organized the evacuation of [another group of] about 8,000 civilians from the eastern parts of Aleppo to the safe areas of the city,” Konashenkov added. “All of them have been placed in special humanitarian centers where they are provided with hot food and medical help if required."

The conflict in Syria, which flared up in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 400,000 people, according to an estimate by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
