More like the sharp downward trend when the pacific solution kicked in, in 2001, then a lag of a year after 2007 when the pacific solution stopped, before we see a sharp increase.

For Australia maybe.

But for the OECD the downward trend continued until 2006 when it started rising again. Just in time for the Pacific Solution to be canned in 2007.

Now how did that happen?

OECD was sharp down, then sharp up. An event maybe. Australia's has been a gradual incline from the low of lows and then a sharp increase from 2008. Suggest a lag from a good policy.

lolly, sounds you've got it the wrong way around. The dark stuff is Australia's numbers. The pale stuff is OECD.

Yes you and I have the colours right, and.

And???

For Australia 2007 was about 4,000, for 2,008 was about 5,000 and for 2009 it was about 6,000 ... hardly a "sharp rise" post 2008. The trend is similar at about 1,000 extra per year.

In any case beyond 2007 there was no longer a PS so there's no PS for you to claim an effect one way or the other.

The trends are years apart as I have explained. Perfectly in line with the pacific solution apart from the lag after the pacific solution stopped. The lag caused by country shoppers getting the word that labor are easy.

And notice the 2 trends now coming together under labor.

The Prime Minister did very well talking to an audience of informed and intelligent people. Unfortunately it takes an idiot like Abbott to inspire the masses.

Lag?? 2003-2004 with PS in full swing and numbers were falling in both OECD and Australia. Then 2006-2007 the numbers were both rising, still with PS in full swing.

But more to the point, WHY? Why was there any connection in the OECD with the Pacific Solution?

quite simply the pacific Solution was a BOAT PEOPLE policy. any graph to compare across the OECD has to compare boat people numbers. Otherwise you really are only comparing apples with oranges

*tsk* Another one who doesn't understand the question.

OK macca... the OECD currently comprises these countries:
  • Australia
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Chile
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Ireland
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Luxembourg
  • Mexico
  • Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovak Republic
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Can you explain how the Pacific Solution reduced numbers of asylum seekers in Slovenia for instance? Or maybe that's a hard one. Maybe something closer at hand - how did Australia's Pacific Solution reduce the numbers of asylum seekers lobbing up in New Zealand?

Look at the carbon tax, for just one example of Labor's communism. Why take from the rich and middle, to give to the working, poor and dole bludgers?

You do not even try to understand issues, yet come on here & try engage in political debate.
The Carbon tax is not a personal income tax, it a company tax FFS.
Its not taking from the "Rich, middle or for that matter low income earners"

And before you type your uninformed bile remember Tony wishes to tax business so poor, middle & rich can have Kids.
Communism & social engineering all in 1
Why won't his tax flow on
Why when his tax nets a hell of a lot more companies than 500 won't it close people down.

If I actually thought you were for real & not some wanker personality of a lonely person whose only friend is a keyboard I would be truly frightened

A company tax? It is all going to flow through, and only those on lower incomes, and dole bludgers, are going to be compensated. I would try engaging in some actual debate with you, but why should I even bother when you post such rude and vile remarks?

WHY would Smithy be expected to ever engage YOU(matty) in INTELLIGENT debate,

He would not want to be guilty of defeating an unarmed opponent.

Well you're trying anyway. Except the graph shows ALL asylum seekers, both in Australia and the OECD. And numbers dropped across the board during the years of the Pacific Solution.

So maybe you also want to answer how the PS (aimed at boats, as you say) also produced a drop in asylum seekers arriving in Australia by plane? Because that seems to be the evidence.

Well?

So I take it lolly and longliar bow out... no explanations from them either huh?

So NOBODY can explain how the Pacific Solution induced a reduction in asylum seeker numbers across the OECD?

Then there's no option but to accept the contrary alternative - that the Pacific Solution reduction was as a result of falling numbers across the OECD. That it wasn't the PS driving the falling numbers but instead the falling numbers seen in the PS was driven by the OECD fall.

In other words, the Pacific Solution DID NOT "stop the boats".

We had already fallen sharply a year earlier as I stated and as the graph states.

The only connection to OECD is seeing labor bring Australia and the OECD equal as shown on the end of the graph.
