Alan Jones 'breached broadcast laws'
SYDNEY radio host Alan Jones has been found to have breached broadcast laws over comments he made about climate change.
But the broadcasting watchdog said his remarks about Prime Minister Julia Gillard, though "disrespectful and disparaging", didn't breach the radio code of conduct.
Complaints were made in August last year after Jones told listeners Ms Gillard and Greens leader Bob Brown should be put in a chaff bag and dumped at sea.
The Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) today ruled the remarks didn't incite violence or brutality.
"While Mr Jones made very disrespectful and disparaging comments about the Prime Minister and others in public office ... they did not amount to a breach of the prohibitions," the watchdog said in a statement.
In a separate investigation, ACMA also looked into remarks made by Jones on March 15 last year when he told listeners on his breakfast show that "Human beings produce .001 per cent of carbon dioxide in the air."
ACMA found Jones had breached the code of practice when he made no effort to check his claims and 2GB needed to improve its processes for fact-checking or face a licence condition.
"The authority found that this was presented as a statement of fact, it was not substantiated by the licensee and there was no evidence that reasonable efforts had been taken to ensure that it was reasonably supportable," said ACMA chairman Chris Chapman.
It also found that 2GB had, on several occasions, failed to comply with the codes' complaints-handling provisions.
Harbour Radio Pty Ltd, the licensee of Sydney radio station 2GB, said it would conduct a review into its compliance processes.
