THE Opposition has attacked a new government website that provides information to asylum seeker boat arrivals, labelling it an online 'welcome advertisement' for people smugglers.

The Coalition's immigration spokesman Scott Morrison has ridiculed the website, which went live this morning, saying it could just as well be called "captainemad.com" after the alleged Iraqi people smuggling kingpin who was granted refugee protection in Australia.

The website outlines the processes that boat arrivals will be subject to whilst their claims for protection are being assessed, including initial health and security checks and review processes.

But Mr Morrison said the website showed just how far the government was out of step with the Australian people on the matter.

"It shows them (boat arrivals) how they can access the protection system, it shows them what entitlements they will have entitlements to taxpayer funded legal advice, migration experts, their appeal rights through the courts."

"It is basically an open invitation to come on down and try your luck," Mr Morrison said.

"You can effectively call this captainemad.com."

But Immigration Minister Chris Bowen's office defended the website, saying whilst Mr Morrison was happy for asylum seekers to get "myths" from people smugglers the government was putting out the facts.

"This information is not new and has always been publicly available on the Immigration website," Mr Bowen's spokesman said.

"It's important to counter the false promises people smugglers are peddling to get asylum seekers on boats."

The spokesman said if Tony Abbott and Mr Morrison really wanted to stop the boats they would support the government's legislation for offshore processing.

Last month saw the highest number of boat arrivals to reach Australia since August 2001, the month of the Tampa incident.
