CHEERS, applause and a standing ovation followed the announcement of a candidate to represent The Nationals for the seat of Lyne at the next federal election.
Almost 200 party members from throughout the electorate, including Taree, Wingham and Wauchope gathered at Port Macquarie Panthers to vote shortly before 5pm last night.
Dr David Gillespie was named as the man to represent the party in the 2014 federal election.
Dr Gillespie is a gastroenterologist at Port Macquarie Base Hospital and last year joined National party senators to campaign against the Carbon Tax in Port Macquarie.
The much-anticipated announcement will see the 54-year-old go head-to-head with incumbent MP Rob Oakeshott next year.
“I’m honoured that the party has chosen me and I’m feeling very proud,” Dr Gillespie told the Port News.
Dr Gillespie beat fellow preselection candidates former councillor and business owner Jamie Harrison, Army officer Captain Brett Sprague, Port Macquarie Panthers general manager Russell Cooper, IT systems engineer Aaron Mendham and owner of Paladin Panels in Wauchope Reg Pierce.
Dr Gillespie represented The Nationals at the 2010 election, and lost to Mr Oakeshott.
