I think it's a case of social darwinism. Everyone will assert their beliefs about that they think makes them Australian and whatever beliefs become popular in the end tend to "define" what it means to be Australian. Relatively "good" ideas are promoted and relatively "bad" ones are discarded. Eventually what seems good will float to the top.

People are proud of good ideas which is why they're proud of being Australian because Australia represents goodness. Everybody loves their country. Nobody wants to think ill of their own country, so they think up good things to say about it.

WTF hit a nerve there? The word propaganda? Are you denying we have propaganda? A pollie gets on TV and declares whatever he/she is doing is "australian values" and you just believe it?

Naturalism to the point of bigotry is a bad thing. We shouldn't have any allusions as to what is happening to this country. We dont need freaks like you dictating to us what our "values" should be. Nobody wants to be like you grandma.

Reducing it to Social Darwinism doesn't examine the content of these values.
People may assert and be proud of their values, but this tells us nothing of the values themselves.

When you recognise something or someone as Australian, what is it that you recognise? How can you tell an Australian book, sound, sensibility, person, etc from a Chinese or German or Argentinian one?

Are you suggesting that your experience is identical to that of a Chinese or German or Argentinian person's? Are you saying that you do not recognise when your actions and attitudes are typically Australian, or else when you are going against the typical?

I am asking only because if you are really, really, unaware of what distinguishes one country from another, then there is nothing I can say that will make you see or hear or perceive anything that will, in turn, make you recognise things that make Australia and AUstralians recognisably Australian.

The Arts, Mateship, Family Values, A fair go for all, Cultural Cringe (and bloody proud of it), Good old xenophobia. The lucky country where we call a bastard a bastard, vegemite (yeast culture), Kath and Kim, confiscating chocolate coated bananas because somebody might plant one and wipe out the banana crop, inept political leaders, interminable bureaucracy.
