As I said, I live in Sydney. No need to go to Melbourne to sit in traffic.

But let's try your theory. Let's say it cost me $100 a week to drive my "gas guzzler" (A bit steep, and a lot more than what I actually do pay, but let's give you the benefit here). The Volt is not free to run as you still pay for power and some petrol as well (But let's just say it is free).

Assuming I just bought an equivalant size car to the volt, how many years do I have to drive to start saving money with the Volt?

OK lets say you can run it off electric because your work place is close by but you still have to wade through heavy stop start traffic. You have already invested in a rooftop solar PV array which alot have already done so because they got a good government rebate.

That's getting you as close to commute free as you can possibly can get. That means you are saving $5200 in fuel bills. Plus if it's an all electric car like the Nissan Leaf you are not getting ripped off on the usual service and maintenance !! That's another $1000 a year in savings !!

So you are saving $6200 by not driving a fossil fool car !! By those estimates the car will pay for itself pretty quickly and when they come down to more reasonable prices it will be a no-brainer which cars people will buy in the future simply because they have over populated the place to the shithouse and the infrastructure is breaking at the seems !!

Like I said come to Melbourne and see for yourself !!

If my workplace was close by I would live in a unit. Can't put one on there.

You don't need to get electric cars serviced? What was I saying about not knowing anything about cars...

So you save $5200 a year on petrol. Let's call it an even $5000 as who drives to work in traffic on holidays? So $5000 a year on a car that is about $40,000 more than an equiverlant sized petrol car.

8 years of driving! And that's when using a $100 a week as a number. For a more real number; I have a 3.5 V6, I travel 50km a day in traffic to work (25 either way), and my car uses 11 litres every 100km. That's 250km a week for work; about 29 litres of petrol; or about $45 at 1.50 a litre.

$45 a week For a large V6. A little corolla would probably be about $30 a week.

For other people in a similar situation to me, why would I spend $60,000 on a car to save money on petrol when I could get a similar standard petrol car for about 20,000? Why wouldn't I buy a much larger car with more room, more power, for 35,000, and still have $25,000 for petrol at (in my situation) about $2,500 a year. I would have to have a volt for ten years to start saving money on fuel. (not including the cost of any petrol or electricity for the volt, or the extra service cost as only Holden can do it.)

How do these car make economic sense to the average Australian? If you buy one to save money you would be a complete fool.

Apart from tyres, suspension and a little bit of the brakes what do you need to get serviced on an electric car ??

EV's have regenerative braking so they don't wear out as quickly as a normal useless fossil fool car that can't possibly recover any energy loss during braking !!

Only an idiot would tell everyone that a 50K EV won't come down in price as the economies of scale increase. Look who knows so little about cars !! You're just hoping they won't come down in price so that you keep ripping people off on oil changes. To bad sucker. EV's will come down in price for the same reason that flat screen TV's came down in price.

and you can shove your oil changes up your arse !! EV's don't need them !!

In fact look at all the things you don't need to get serviced or replaced on an EV.

- No ripoff petrol
- No getting ripped off on service and maintenance
- No oil changes
- No oil filter to dispose of
- No filthy carcinogenic sump oil to dispose of
- No transmission to pack up and maintain
- No spark plugs to change
- No timing belt to change
- No fuel filter to change
- No radiator and hoses to change
- No expensive coolant flushes
- No fuel injectors to pack up
- No problems with contaminated fuel
- No exhaust pipe to change
- No toxic tail pipe emissions
- No green house gas emissions
- No catalytic converter
- Create your own energy at home using your own rooftop PV array
- Silent operation
- No wars faught over oil
- No environmentally damaging oil spills
- regenerative braking recovers lost energy when braking
- reduction in brake maintenance due to regenerative braking

Hi Nail,
We caught Longweekend out using another name - Quantum Grin

I believe longweekend lives in Adelaide? (I think I saw him say that once) I live in Sydney. I am happy for any moderator to check my ISP.

These continuous accusations of socks makes this forum look like it is full of paranoid retards. So far I have been acused of being matty, freediver, and longweekend.

Could it be that there is more than one person that thinks your a self appointed know it all fool? Would it be so shattering to your world view to find out that there are many people who disagree with you that you have to pretend they are all the same person?

I don't care who the bugger you are. Your argument is the same as madweekend's and that if an EV doesn't suit his or your ridiculous needs then nobody else should have one. Like I have said to him many times before is to bring his gas guzzling ford piece of sh,t to melbourne and drive it in melborne peak hour traffic each day for a month which is what most working people do. Lets see how much juice you have left in the tank at the end of the week Wink

Whatever EV technology is presented to you will always find a fault with it and tell everyone that it is not ready yet so they have to wait another 10 years before they can have it. That attitude spells aussie low achieving wanker !!

If you believe that your an idiot. The only person forcing anything on anyone is you. You keep making these stupid comments about people driving gas guzzlers and being bought off by oil companies for not running out and buying an electric car. You want ford and Holden to stop everything and start making electric cars when there is nothing stopping them from selling electric cars produced by the parents companies, which is what we are starting to see happen already.

If you want an electric car, go buy one. No one is stopping you. Buy if you don't have one, and your still driving a "gas guzzler", then why should everyone drop everything and accommodate your stupid vision? Put your money where your mouth is!

Quote:

But at least he can drive his gas guzzling Ford to Melbourne. Try getting an electic car from one capital city to another in Australia.

Maybe that's not a bad bet. He drives his petrol car to your city and drives around for a few hours and then drives home. You drive your electic car (surely you already have one, right?) to his home city, drive around for a few hours and then drive home. He can show you his petrol reciet and any money spent on food and accommodation, and then you can do the same. Let's see who gets home first and who has the bigger bill...

Who drives from one capital city to another just to go to work ??  Smiley

Come to melbourne and see what it is like to drive to work  each day and then check what's left in the tank at the end of the week or day !! It costs a fortune to drive a gas guzzler in stop start traffic but somehow in your small mind you can rationalize that as an imaginary cost !!

If you need long range that is exactly what the GM Volt does. If you only do short commutes which is what 80% of people do then you can run the GM Volt purely on battery and not spend a cent on fool.

But of course as soon as it's a car that uses an electric drive train then you have 101 brain dead reasons why it's no good for anyone.

As I said, I live in Sydney. No need to go to Melbourne to sit in traffic.

for a comparison, the Prius takes 24 years of fuel savings to cover the extra cost of the vehciwel inthe first place.

hardly economic.
