That is the argument I shall be taking.

Yes but to assume all electricity is produced through burning coal and always will be is wrong.
There is nothing stopping anyone from charging their car from the solar cells on their roof and if that person lives in one of the worlds many busy built up cities and like many people mainly travels a few hundred stop start kms a week an electric car is all they will need.
Im also betting that as prices come down and new breakthroughs in battery technology comes through electric cars will replace most fossil fueled powered vehicles steadily over the next 50 yrs.

And that is reasonable, but the thrust of the argument from lastnail seems to be to hate the fact that they arent here now or in the last 5 years. I want a flying car too like Back to the Future... the fact that the technology doesnt exist should not impede my wishes, correct? I am entitled to have one (and for $20,000) and Ford should be required to build one.

its hard to take the EV evangelistic position seriously. I buy a car because of what it can do and how it meets my needs. I object to being told I should have to drive an EV when the stupid things dont meet my needs (or anyone elses).

Most people only make short trips every day:
to & from work
to the supermarket

The electric vehicle meets this need & the price is almost free.
That would meet my needs.
Do you like paying for petrol?

Well Prevailing, given that Economics is all about Supply & Demand, perhaps you can explain to us, the reasons for the massive increases in Oil & Coal, in particular?

If not shortages, then what are the reasons that have influenced the Crude Oil Price?

For example, the Price of a barrel of WTi went from around US$10 in the late 1990's, to US$147 a barrel in 2008, before crashing to around US$40 in 2009, before starting to climb again, where it is now reaching back towards US$100.

so, what reasoning could there be for the size of these increases & the great variations?

Good question but there is no doubt that the major oil fields are well in decline.

Notwithstanding what Prevailing come up with, it is correct that the old & largest of the Oil fields are now in what is correctly called the Depletion stage, which simply means that those fields have Peaked, in terms of Production!

As the oldest & largest fields have Peaked, the total Global Supply therefore is reliant on the newer fields, but these newer fields are smaller in size & Production AND they more expensive in Price, as they are more difficult to access OR they involve much more processing, as they are of a lower grade.

Also, the other alternatives, such as Tar Sands, involve a great deal of processing & are barely Energy Positive, when looked at on an EROEI (Energy Return On Energy Invested) basis.

Hi Perceptions,
Well - we have to do something.
We can't burn up in a few hundred years what nature took 100's of millions of years to make - oil, gas & coal.
It will definetly change our atmosphere with possible catastrophic consequences.

The electric car with it's energy source being solar cells is one answer which looks very promising.
Solar cells on the roof of your house putting energy into the grid during the day -
charging up the car at night from the grid.
This removes the need for expensive storage batteries at home.

I can't understand why Nail has been pilloried from pillar to post for
years by self proclaimed "scientists" like longweekend for suggesting this.

ah... the old failed argument which somehow has people believing that the only maintenance ever done on a car is the engine.  forgetting, the brakes, chassis, steering, accessories, body etc. and while electric motors are simpler, the idea that they willbe maintenance free is simplistic as is the notion that transmissions (yes EVs still have them in simpler form) are maintenance free is childish.

perhaps the only EV you have ever seen (or driven) is a remote-control toy car. it certainly sounds like it.

so at every service interval of 6 months what service do you think they will do ?? fill up the wiper bottle !!

And I suppose you think they will still charge you 300 bucks to do this !!

so how do you account for this lot of EV's circa 2000 which GM obviously didn't want anyone to have Sad

Just as there is no doubt that the NEW oil fields are significantly BIGGER than the current ones. It is such a pity that the doom-and-gloom paranoia of the left and the dumb (same thing) rarely matches reality. Perhaps that is why every left-governed country is such a mess or headed there.

Rubbish,
there has never been a bigger oil field found than in Saudi Arabia.

You seem to have next to no idea about modern motor vehicles. You seem to think that all repairs and maintenance are on the engine. That pretty much makes readers wonder if youve even ever owned a car. You do seem to be remarkably unfamiliar with the costs of owning one or how to maintain one.

Rubbish,

The shale oil fields of the USA are 7 times larger than Saudi Arabia and recent improvements in drilling technology (going sideways) has made many other fields now economic and viable.

Then we go to Canada whose tar sands are now becoming economic to recover and also contain 7 times the amount as in Saudi Arabia. Southern American oil fields are now also becoming economic driven both by higher oil prices and cheaper extraction technologies.

So you might as well get over the fact that oil is still in plentiful supply. All we have done so far is access the EASY sources and as drilling technology continues to evole more and more deeper and otherwise inaccessible fields will come online.

I know this is uncomfortable for you to accept but the peak oil nonsense is just that - nonsense. That is why we were supposed to run out of oil in 1985 and then again in 2000 and why now we are supposed to be experiencing chronic shortages while there is in fact a mild GLUT in world oil supplies.

Must suck to be an uninformed gullible leftie, mustn't it?

That is correct, the Saudi fields are the largest ever found & GM may be interested in the following chart on past & likely future discoveries, which has been produced by Mobil.

I, for one, would not suggest betting against the trend & GM, I am not a "Lefty"!

The Government could be guilty of conspiracy to destroy the Australian manufacturing industry through the malicious removal of legally required trade protection and deliberately undermining the employment security and economic rights of hundreds of thousands of Australians.  I suggest they did this in collaboration with overseas unelected NGO's and foreign agents such as the IMF, the WTO, The World Bank ect... Doom and gloom appears to be your diet of choice. Its always bad, no matter what. Well enjoy your denial because history is definately on my side. The doom and gloom merchants have rarely been right and where oil is concerned almost never. Todays 'impossible' oil field is tomorrow's bonanza. You dont seem to ever figure hope and progress into your beliefs.

But thats ok becaue positive, hopeful people are today doing what you say cant be doing all to deliver petrol to the car you say should have been dry 25 years ago. I look forward to you being wrong for the next 25 just as you have for the last.

try being positive! You might even like it!
