200 divided by 28.8 = 7.0  hours to charge the battery.

What is your point?

Okay, just trying to do some calculations.

The nissan leaf has an average range of 140kms.

Using the on-board 3.3 kW charger the Leaf can be fully recharged from empty in 8 hours from a 220/240-volt 30 amp supply.  So 3.3kw x 8 hours is 26.4kw.

To generate this kind of electricity I would need a 5kw solar installation.

This costs approximatley $13,500, as my neighbour just put this system on.

Solar has a repay time of 4 years.

To look at it realistically, its a lot of outlay for a small vehicle.

So what. Some people are forking out $100 a week in petrol to drive their car to work each week. That's $5000 a year plus another $1000 on maintenance !! $13,500 for a 5KW solar PV array is a few years worth of driving a petrol car !! Don't tell you think driving a fossil fool car is a good investment !!

Do your calculations properly.

How much electricity did you use ?? At 20 cents per KWh that's about 5 bucks !! How much at the fossil fool bowser ??

and how do you ever recover the costs on your fossil fool usage ?? People don't just install solar PV arrays for electric cars. There are lots of other appliances it can help offset.

But you arent factoring in how the electric car hasnt reached economies of scale yet.

The nissan leaf is over $10k more than a car of equivelent size and comfort.

Like Bobby has said, better of waiting for them to be $20k.

At $30k, its still cheaper to have a petrol car.

So to do 140kms you need 26kw.

Its not hard for a person to do 20,000kms per year.

20,000/140 x 26kw x 20cents = $742.86

Our Nissan does 8.2L p/100kms.

20000/100 x 8.2L x 1.45P/L = $2,378 petrol.
2 x services per year = $400.

So our Nissan costs $2,778 to your nissan leaf of $742.

So its $2,036 cheaper assuming the Leaf has zero maintenance costs.

The hyundai 120 retails for about $16k, the Nissan Leaf of similar size retails for $51k as I just looked up on car sales.

Thats a lot of petrol man.

So why didn't you buy a hyundai then ??

Try driving it through peak hour stop start traffic as most people do these days Sad

My wife just paid $500+ for a major service on her Mazda  and they still wanted another $130 for a radiator flush !! They really know how to charge Sad You are dreaming if the average person can get out of spending $1000 a year on parts and maintenance on a fossil fool vehicle !!

And the Leaf sells for around 30K in the US even when the AUD is above parity. Go figure !!

Blame your greedy retailer chain for that as usual Sad

And therein lies the problem and one of two big reasons EV sales are so pathetic. EVs are vastly more expensive to have and run than petrol cars while being vastly less useful.

One day that may change but until then, only a moron would pay a whole lot more for a whole lot less car just because he might save a few thousands dollars a year in fuel.

No problems muppet. Just look at the undisputable facts Sad

Nissan Leaf in the US costs $30K USD

Nissan Leaf in Australia costs $50K AUD

1 AUD = 1.052 USD

Go Figure !!

Locally built Holden Cruze Petrol car costs $20K

Fully Imported Holden Cruze Petrol car costs $20K

Locally built Toyota Camry Hybrid costs $30K

Fully Imported Holden Cruze (GM Volt) Hybrid costs $60K

Go figure !!

I needed a larger car than an i20.

I was merely pointing out for size the leaf and i20 are compariable for size.

One costs $16k and the other costs $51k.

When you own brand new cars, maintenance is very minimal.  One of the reasons I bought a nissan is their low servicing costs.

So why dont you import a leaf for $30k?

It tarriffs are what are out of control, not the retail network.

You have the money to buy an EV & keep your petrol car.

I go to the back of the plane mate, never heard of one backing into a mountain.

If they made an EV Ute I might consider it since my ute doesnt go very far at all.

The car I packaged for my wife needs to hold two kids, pram and long distance driving.  There is no EV currently on the market that can do that.
