Much more should be spent on intelligence and more power given to these services to protect the state.

How much more power do you need to get info on your own government Israeli?

Big deal. Who cares if we know its name or not. We're never going to know what goes on behind the scenes. The only thing public about it is its name. The only thing they're going to be discussing in Parliament is its name and its mission and purpose. Everything else is secret.

How does this change things? There is nothing we could possibly do to change the way ASIS operates. The people connected with ASIS would never allow us to find out about its internal workings. They're paid too much to give any of us that information.

Don't even think about kidnapping the Defence Minister. Your life is too important for you to get involved in national crimes. Get married and play computer games instead. It's none of our business.

Seriously, what if you did kidnap one of their people? He'd probably tell you rubbish and lead you to some fake decoy organisation set up to look like the real ASIS. You'd waste your time finding them. By the time you do, ASIO will have you nailed because they'd have agents tracking their top men. Your plan to infiltrate ASIS and infiltrate their secret operations would fail in no time. You'd either be arrested or start receiving "cease and desist" letters. Even worse, they might kidnap you and make you disappear for stalking their agents.

The reason why this organisation has a name and a logo is so that the government can dedicate funding for it and maintain their "apparatus" of secrecy. Outside of Australia, they wouldn't even be operating under the name "ASIS," so if we can't identify them at home, what are the chances people can identify them abroad? It's not like they walk around with "ASIS" written on their backs.

That was actually quite interesting.  Wouldn't just about every country have some such organisation though, and wouldn't all such organisations operate fairly secretively out of necessity?  So what's the big deal about the address then?  It was the historical background, an overview of ASIS as it is today and some brief accounts of what ASIS has done in the past.  I don't think that he would have given away any national secrets, as this information was already out there anyway.

It was interesting....but hardly new info, I first heard about ASIS in high school (over 30 years ago)....

Kind of like the CIA, everyone ALWAYS knew they existed, and that they (CIA) were spies....

Well the big deal imo is that he outed them. Had a media conference and gave that speech. You would think that was contrary to thier directives.

Yeah i think every country has them. I thought ASIO was ours.

SOB

Only you would believe that the fact that ASIS exists would be considered secret. What did you think they were the Aussie MiB.  Grin

You would do well to learn to use google, that way you would have a modicum of basic knowledge before you post.

BTW, ASIO is our internal spy agency and ASIS is our external agency; see how google would have answered that for you

Did you read the friggin speech? Obviously not. I was saying what HE said. You look pretty stupid trying to insult me over something that was in the speech when you didnt read it.

SOB

Actually you stated "Well the big deal imo is that he outed them" and that is where my 'insult' came form. Get it now?

If the conversation is too complex, try getting a semi-literate child to explain it to you.

BTW, I did hear his speech and no my reply had nothing to do with it, just your infantile opinion about it.

ASIS is not so secret that their very existence is supposed to be a secret, they generally just work on the premise of 'it's none of your business'. But making some vague reference to passed operations is not 'outing them', as the aren't the MiB.

Yeah I heard of ASIO back in the 70s because a relative worked for them (no they werent a spy - since not ALL ASIS or ASIO employees are spies). I quickly learned that if you did tell anyone they considered you paranoid and didnt believe you. the ppl in the right age group would remember that you couldn't mention the CIA either.

Funny how zero people commented on your excellent use of irony, maybe because nothing in your post even remotely indicated it was ironic. Seems you are trying to cover up your lack of knowledge, and rather poorly too.

So you managed to get me on a single grammar error, well done, the kudos should be pouring in any moment now.  Grin

BTW since we are looking at minor errors in application, you might want to use the supplied spell checker before you run off at the mouth about other people's minor mistakes.

Here's a hint. I'm is not spelled im.
