In many areas, Sydney used to be much worse. Blacktown and Mt Druitt were no-go areas a generation ago, full of violent, alcohol-fuelled
white rage. Even Bondi had its moments.
Immigration has raised the population. And with this, you get more consumer choice. Who would have even thought of buying snapper in Liverpool thirty years ago?
Now, the food is better, the prices are lower, and the shelves are overflowing.
Immigration is no cure-all panacea, but I don't know anyone who would want to return to the bland, boring and insular suburbs of the 1970s. Back then, if you grew up in Liverpool, you stayed there. There was a huge class divide in Sydney. Without a doubt, immigration has helped to change this.
