Only a very small number of people who are granted visas claim asylum (less than 1%). And the numbers per country - even region - are monitored and risk assessment ratings change every year and visa grants are made more difficult if the risk increases.
This is why the non-name rorters on boats could not get a tourist visa.

Simple Soren, don't play with numbers, you know they only confuse you. The "people who are granted visas" includes everyone who comes into this country including all tourists and people entering for business purposes. So what if only 1% of them request asylum? The number arriving by boat and requesting asylum is only 0.1% of the same number.

WHy?

Because if these people applied for a visa - any kin of visa - they would not be given one. Only about 1% of visa holders claim asylum because you don't give you a visa just for the asking. You will not be granted a tourist visa if they think you are going to claim asylum once you arrived.

That's why the boat people are not taking the easy option of a short flight from Bali to Darwin -they would not be given a visa of any kind. That's why they are paying big dollar for a passage on a leaky boat.

So these are all people who could not enter Australia legally. But once they enter illegally, without ID, we give them everything. We are welcoming and rewarding people whom we would not allow to enter legally.
That is right only in your confused, Gillard-addled world, Gino.

Er... they can't stay in government if they don't get the votes. Democracy. New-fangled thingy, hasn't been around for 40,000 years like cave painting and tribal warfare and sticks which are evidently much better ways of governing a country. Sticks especially have been effective for the past 50,000 years.

The political achievements of 60,000 years of successful Aboriginal civilisation are surpassed only by the sheer dynamism of 80,000 years of continuous Aboriginal innovation and literary, architectural and scientific tradition.
