I saw a bit of it - it was no where near as good as in the
opening ceremony in China.

It looked 2nd rate & very amateurish - almost cringe worthy.

IT WAS SECOND RATE BUT STILL EMBARRASINGLY EXPENSIVE.

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FEEL THE SHAME I WONDER??????????????

Too expensive!

Much like the Commonwealth Games that only one other country apart from Australia (Queensland) bothered to bid for.

Queensland has budgeted a billion dollars (which will blow out to double that amount)to set up for the games, but can't afford to give a little bit of aid to the extremely disabled of the state.

Shame! shame! shame!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FEEL THE SHAME?

olympics are boring, have been for a very long time.

they are distanced from 99.9% of the world, coverage is appalling.

I used to enjoy them in the days before they were all about money.

Not so much these days.

The nihilists are out in force I see.

The Olympics is about the pursuit of individual excellence, extreme self-discipline, competing against the best, pushing yourself, overcoming resistances, glory. All noble pursuits.

the spirit of the glorious Kim Jong Il lives on!

Quote:
Om Yun Chol claimed Olympic gold in sensational style after double world champion Wu Jingbiao failed to make his last lift in a thrilling finale to weightlifting's 56kg category at the London Games.

Amazingly, Om, from North Korea, triumphed from the morning's B group - supposedly for second-tier lifters - and was present in the stands to watch China's Wu fall agonisingly short.

Om, only the fifth man in history to lift triple his own body weight, put in a sensational performance as he equalled the world record and set a new Olympic best in the clean and jerk element (168kg).

His overall total of 293kg was four kilos more than managed tonight by Wu (289kg), who had to settle for silver, with fellow A group lifter Valentin Hristov, 18, claiming bronze - a first-ever weightlifting Olympic medal for Azerbaijan.

Om's victory is even more of a surprise considering he only managed sixth place in November's world championships - won by Wu - and has added 26kg to his total in the space of eight months.

Asked how he did this, Om replied: "There are no secrets. The reason I'm able to get the gold medal at this Olympics is due to the warm love and consideration of general Kim Jong-il (North Korea's late leader) and comrade Kim Jong-un. And because of them I was able to get great strength today."

Earlier in the day, Om added: "How can any man possibly lift 168kg? I believe the great Kim Jong-il looked over me."

North Korean gold - 3
Australian gold - 1

The worst thing is that these losers let down everyone who invested time,  money and emotion into them - their families, their team mates, their coaches and their country...they are a disgrace and too much of our economy is invested into sports... Tongue Tongue

Exactly. You just need to put your feet in a shopping bag so that they're not visible under the door.

Well not really.  They mightn't be the world number 1, but they're still pretty buggeren good to even make it to the olympics.  Unless of course we're talking about the joke competitors who we're supposed to cheer for their 'spirit" like eddie the eagel, eric the eel and the latest addition to the catalgoue of olympic parasites, Hamadou Djibo Issaka. Rather than encourage him with calls of "you can do it" I'd have rathered security remove him from the course, beat him with their batons and put him on the first plane back to Nigeria...or better yet, give hima cnaoe and a paddle.  We'll see how much of a joke he thinks it is when he's forced to row back to Africa.  Encouraging him only makes a further mockery of the olympic ideals.

Quote:
You can do it," roared the announcer at Dorney Lake. Some of the crowd were on their feet, urging him on to the line.

No, this wasn't a British rower sprinting for gold. This was Hamadou Djibo Issaka, crawling to the finishing hooter in last place in a single sculls repechage at the London Olympics.

It wasn't quite "Eric the Eel" of Sydney Games fame - but it wasn't far off.

Djibo Issaka, a 35-year-old Nigerian, only learnt how to row three months ago but was given a wildcard to the London Olympics "to strengthen the principle of universal representation."

With a less-than-impressive technique and with the tank almost empty, he slumped over as he crossed the line on Sunday in 8 minutes 39.66 seconds - nearly 1.40 minutes behind the race winner.

Fellow wildcard Eric Moussambani also became a fan and media favourite at the Sydney Games in 2000 with his awkward technique and slow performances.

His one minute, 52.72 seconds in the 100 metres freestyle heats was more than double that of leading competitors and even outside the 200-metre world record.

Earlier this year, the Eel was named the Equatorial Guinea Olympic swimming team coach but the country did not bring a team to London.

These losers make a mockery of the Olympic ideal and the amateur code...it just makes me sick how they act out, the poor manners and sportsmanship, not only are they losers - but they are bad losers and that is unforgivable...what a disappointment they are and how they shame our nation with their self centered obnoxious behavior... Sure, those are noble pursuits.
The tv coverage going from reporter to reporter, then a few freeze frames of some person happy/sad is not a noble pursuit.
Watching anyone else do anythng is not a noble pursuit

the olympics is not about involvement, it is about exclusion.
It is not noble.
