More jobs to go as food company closes down
Aug 10th, 2012 at 11:19am

More manufacturing jobs going offshore !! When will it end ?

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-08-09/more-jobs-to-go-as-food-company-closes-dow...

Quote:
A food manufacturer is closing its factory at Altona, with the loss of more than 100 jobs.

Kerry Ingredients is laying off 85 workers from the factory floor.

Another 20 administrative staff will also be laid off.

That means the Altona plant will close next March.

The company says it is shifting production to other factories interstate and in the Asia-Pacific as a result of a manufacturing review.

The National Union of Workers' (NUW) spokesman Tim Kennedy says it is a disaster for staff.

"These are high quality jobs, high-skilled jobs, high-paid jobs, and we're very concerned about the crisis that seems to be taking over manufacturing in this state," he said.

The union's organiser, Julie Morgan believes it is driven partly by cheap labour overseas.

"I feel that part of it with product going overseas for manufacture must be to do with wages," she said.

"These people are on reasonably good wages but nothing outstanding, wages that you'd expect to find in Australia, but they look at going to countries like Malaysia and China to get the product made."

Kerry Ingredients says the workers will be redeployed or offered redundancy packages.

The announcement coincides with the latest job figures.

Nationally, unemployment dropped from 5.3 to 5.2 per cent.

In Victoria the number of people in full time work fell by 11,600.

The July figures shows Victoria's unemployment rate eased to 5.4 per cent.

Yes nail, where will it end?.  Now we have the liberal premiers, planing on sacking thousands of public servants.  All well and good I hear the liberals say, in order to cut debt.  Except where are these people supposed to go?.  No one really thinks of that, do they?.    Sad

I daresay it crosses their minds at odd times, but they brush it aside because they don't really care.

As soon as the general public wake up to the fact that the politicians are not there to give them any comforts, the better.

In other words, they don't care!

Nope not me mate.
We re-engineering supply chain and moved preliminary manufacture of Pharma to India under a project I did.
China was not considered - mainly because the Government basically told us how many people we had to employ and who!

India was much more suitable.

We didn't close plants - we moved divisions out that were more suited to be done elsewhere than Australia.

Hope that clears it up.

But just as a reminder - we saved over US$13m per year in OpEx.

Hey lets all us Aussie citizens get together with these workers and target and sue sue Julia Gillard for destroying these jobs maliciously by failing to uphold their constitutional right to economic security and free customs... Smiley Smiley

Julia Gillard - twice selected, never elected.

Those battlers received 2 weeks redundancy per year of service, plus their leave, plus their notice.
