This is a serious question, why was Malaysia deemd illegal or wrong?
Why is Nauru different? It hadnt signed the refugee convention when the rodent started shipping people there either. Oh can someone with half a brain explain it? Gold medal and fried brains trolling is boring after the  thousandth time.

Its quite simple, tractor-boy. Malaysia was SPECIFICALLY rejected on a number of front. Nauru was specifically not mentioned meaning that there is no reason why it could not be used now. Malaysias non-signing and consistent refusal to do so was the main reason. Nauru has signed it (now) and therefore there is no reason not to use it.

so you claim it's because Malaysia haven't  signed the UN treaty on refos?
so Nauru was also illegal when Howard sent people there, but now you claim because Nauru have signed it Nauru is OK?
because if the gov push ahead with it you can guarantee it will be challenged in court you know?
As someone that supports things how they were before Howard appeased the xenophobic whores I hope it is challenged and proven to be illegal, that will fix the whores.

Labor will cope flack for changing tact and following the report, but so will Abbott if he opposes any recommendations.

You really have zero interest in anything that is good for anyone, do you. As long as you can hate Howard a bit more then thats all that matters. Kill a few thousand boat people? no worries! As long as Howard can get blamed for you something.

You are a real disgrace to the human race.

so let's see what Gillard has said... she will support ALL of the recommendations which are essentially the Pacific Solution and the possibility of Malaysia sometime in the future.

So this is how Gillard says 'oops, I was wrong'? get a committee designed the get a result yu want and then implement it because 'experts decided it'?

Honestly, this woman is a truly appalling leader andn it has now taken 5 years to finally say that Rudd was a fool for stopping it and Gillard is a bigger fool for not re-implementing it until she had no other option.

Malaysia specifically wan't deemed  illegal or wrong. THe problem was that the Immigration Minister did not have the power to send asylum seekers to a country that has no legal obligations to protect them under the legislation as it currently stands.

It would have been exactly the same if the people swap was with Nauru or virtually any other country.

I like how he said, basically, turn back boats where safe to do so. It was not that dissimilar to Abbotts turn back the boats except it was a more defined vague statement if thats possible.

No - that is not correct.  The report does not recommend turning boats back to Indonesia nor does it recommend TPVs.

It does however support a major part of the Green policy - ie increasing intake to 20,000.

No - the report does not say that at all.  What the report says is:

The panel notes that the conditions necessary for effective, lawful and safe turnback of irregular vessels carrying asylum seekers to australia are not currently met but that this situation could change in the future, in particular if appropriate regional and bilateral arrangements are in place

That is nothing like Abbotts "turn back the boats"

It's a blend, but the focus is plain.

Stop the boats.

Make sure people that come by boats don't gain unfair advantage over those that don't.

Exactly. And it is quaintly Ruddesque in how it takes a Howard policy, makes a few minor tweaks and then declares this great new idea!!

Getting rid of the Pacific Solution was Rudds only identifiable policy of his own - a giant screwup!
