Id you were up to speed today you would have heard the Coalition are supporting ALL of the recommendations.
Yes, politically Tony has been painted into a corner. With some tweaks, this is effectively what was on the table last time around and he voted it down. He can't go against it this time so already he's got egg on his face.
If the boats don't stop, Labor can point to Abbott and said they went along with his demands and the boats didn't stop. If the boats do stop Labor can say they followed expert advice and hey presto it worked and so didn't they do a good job.
By the way for all the ignorants claiming this is the Pacific Solution down to the last comma and full stop - WRONG. Paris Aristotle (one of the members of the advisory panel) denied that claim emphatically in his interview on Lateline last night and pointed out the significant differences. For instance:
Quote:PARIS ARISTOTLE: No. There would have to be accommodation established for them. They may have to return to that accommodation each evening, but it's not intended that it would be a detention centre in any of the proposed transfer arrangements.
and again:
Quote:I heard one comment that was made by one of the political parties that said what we were proposing was to set up a network of detention centres across the Pacific. That is a completely false and inaccurate characterisation of what is in the report and if the report had've been read, it would've been impossible for them to come to that conclusion.
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2012/s3567010.htmThe recommendations also include the setting up of regional processing centres with the reopening of current centres as a transitional arrangement. Who knows, even the Greens may support that. We'll see.
