Labor to act quickly to reopen Nauru.
Aug 13th, 2012 at 8:26pm

Will this neutralize the issue?

Quote:
LABOR will tomorrow introduce legislation into parliament to allow the resumption of offshore processing on Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

Julia Gillard announced the dramatic policy shift today after the Labor caucus endorsed Angus Houston's expert panel report on asylum-seekers, resolving to back all 22 of its recommendations.

The Prime Minister said the government would also move to immediately boost the annual humanitarian intake from 13,500 to 20,000 a year, as recommended by the Houston panel, and limit the access of humanitarian entrants to family reunion provisions.

In a further response to the Houston report, Ms Gillard said the government would restart talks with Malaysia to improve safeguards for asylum-seekers under Labor's proposed people swap deal.

Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said asylum-seekers intercepted by Australian authorities from today risked being processed offshore.

Ms Gillard said the government had agreed in principle to all of the panel's recommendations.

“This report charts the way forward and I will compromise in order to enact the recommendations of this report,” the Prime Minister said.

She said the government remained committed to its Malaysia Solution, but Labor's agreement to process asylum-seekers in Nauru and PNG would not be contingent on the Coalition's agreement to Malaysia.

Ms Gillard said she hoped to have the legislation to allow the resumption to offshore processing passed by the end of this week.

It would require agreement by parliament to each nation where asylum-seekers would be processed, which could later be withdrawn by parliamentary vote.

Well phony tony won't be able to parrot stop the boats rark rark stop the boats, every five minutes.
That mixed with the fact the carbon tax has not created the mayhem phony tony and the solid gold conga line said it will and Labor going up 5 points on the last news poll is likely just the beginning.

My bet is that Tony will try and get TPVs into the legislation to keep the issue alive. I can't see him voting down the legislation, but he'll have coverage if the boats keep on coming and he gets blamed for stalling on Malaysia.

are you even capable of an intellectual response? Your beloved labor have given in and gone for the HOWARD SOLUTION. Howard and Abbott's view onthe matters is now endorsed by the labor party.

Thats one liberal policy now in place thanks to abbott.  now we just need a few more...

What, like work choices and cuts to valued programs to fund his direct action policy. Why do we need Abbott if the boats stop and the economy keeps on spinning with a carbon tax.

So why did Labor oppose John Howard's Nauru offshore processing again?

Abbott had a pretty big win today. He got most of HIS policy in place. That always looks good to voters because here is Abbott getting the only sensible policy into place FROM OPPOSITION. So imagine what he will acheive as PM?  thats the perception that labor faces - that Gillard is a stubborn policy dunce while even the govts own advisors want Abbotts policy.  Thats electoral gold!

Just give Abbott his day, ok. He won this round pretty convincingly. and from the opposition benches. It doesnt get much more impressive than that.

To where all good leaders move to. From good to better. And despite all the rhetoric, even the govts own advisors said labors policy was crap and that the Liberal one was good.

because in addition to being soft-hearted they are also soft-headed. Rudds 'good intentions' caused the deaths of thousands. As a good leftie you should be pretty familiar with the concept of mass killings in support of your ideology.

So you're saying Labor would have been better off going to the election with the boat issue unresolved. This might be the battle they had to lose to win the war. I'm sure Liberal strategist will be a touch concerned about how this may play out.

Anything Rudd or Labor have done in that area was accidental - Tnoys actions to deliberatly ensure that it has continued indefinatly is very different - He made sure it kept happening for his political gain.

Labor has admitted they think John Howard was right on refugee terrorism. So how much will this add to the country's medical bill when we have to treat these new victims once then get to Australia.

And what of the elephant in the room, the legal challenge. When the high court likely deems offshore processing illegal, just like Malaysia.
