If the Australia Government resumes sending boat people offshore it is a victory for common sense.

How foolish do Gillard and Bowen look now?  Grin

I don't think she does look foolish. I hate the decision it's a disgrace. But I don't think she looks foolish, I bet she has an automatic jump in the polls. Abbott is the one snookered over this because the dickhead won't be able to squawk stop the boats. She has done exactly what Abbott would not have thought she would do. It's removed another wedge, first the carbon tax, now this.

If her intent was to remove the argument to "stop the boats", why didn't she implement the Nauru option 5 weeks ago? Or even 12 month ago?

What, like work choices and cuts to valued programs to fund his direct action policy. Why do we need Abbott if the boats stop and the economy keeps on spinning with a carbon tax.

Just give Abbott his day, ok. He won this round pretty convincingly. and from the opposition benches. It doesnt get much more impressive than that.

well done Tony Abbott

I think off shore processing is wrong it sends a message to the rest of the world we are racist assholes.
I believe we should accept our fair share of refugees and that it  should not have any bearing on it if you come by plane or boat.
I think they could have, had they wanted to, handed down just the last clause of their recommendations! The one about not bringing out other family,EVER. It would have reduced the amount trying to flee here from their war torn countries. Who would want to flee to such a nasty xenophobic place. This decision just reaffirms  the white Australia policy is still alive and well in the two old parties. if these refugees were Whites We would be sending out ships to meet them and bring them back here. a sad bloody day for this country that nasty xenophobes finally wore Gillard down.

skippy - you lost.

Just the first one for Gillard. A preview of her upcoming election loss. How this government can continue is just beyond me. Gillard doesn't have the right to govern anymore.

Actually, she does, at least until the next election.

Gillard said, "The truth is (the report) has endorsed some parts of the government's policy ... not all of it. (But) it's not a day for a political scoreboard."

That makes me laugh, given what her response would've been if Houston's report had backed her position instead of Abbotts.

Actually, she doesn't. She screwed up big time on this policy in 2007 as Deputy PM and has refused to go back until now. It's taken an independent panel to reverse her policy (or lack thereof). Will she now stop blaming Abbott, when clearly she is at fault? I doubt it. She doesn't deserve to govern when she hands over decisions like this to people outside of her government. She's supposed to lead but is clearly incapable of doing her job. She should call an election and resign as PM at the same time.
