Not if the Greens had their way. They would prefer that we let everyone in here, genuine or not.

Although I vote Green I don't agree with them on this issue.
We can't take every refugee in the world.
There must be at least 200 million of them.

I always found it quite funny Bobby you voted for a pro-gay party and the only party to have an openly homosexual leader.....

It was difficult to vote for them as I suffer from homophobia.
I only voted for them so that no major party
had absolute power by controlling the Senate.

Yes, politically Tony has been painted into a corner. With some tweaks, this is effectively what was on the table last time around and he voted it down. He can't go against it this time so already he's got egg on his face.

If the boats don't stop, Labor can point to Abbott and said they went along with his demands and the boats didn't stop. If the boats do stop Labor can say they followed expert advice and hey presto it worked and so didn't they do a good job.

By the way for all the ignorants claiming this is the Pacific Solution down to the last comma and full stop - WRONG. Paris Aristotle (one of the members of the advisory panel) denied that claim emphatically in his interview on Lateline last night and pointed out the significant differences. For instance:

Quote:
PARIS ARISTOTLE: No. There would have to be accommodation established for them. They may have to return to that accommodation each evening, but it's not intended that it would be a detention centre in any of the proposed transfer arrangements.

and again:

Quote:
I heard one comment that was made by one of the political parties that said what we were proposing was to set up a network of detention centres across the Pacific. That is a completely false and inaccurate characterisation of what is in the report and if the report had've been read, it would've been impossible for them to come to that conclusion.

http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2012/s3567010.htm

The recommendations also include the setting up of regional processing centres with the reopening of current centres as a transitional arrangement. Who knows, even the Greens may support that. We'll see.

I will say this much.

We commission a report which Im sure has cost a few million to do.  The report comes out with 22 recommendations.  I am pleased that the ALP is prepared to adopt all 22 recomendations from the expert panel.

If you arent prepared to accept the recommendations from an expert panel that you commission and costs millions, you shouldnt commission them.

If only they did the same with the Henry Report.

The ALP gets a tick from me for responsible government on the issue of accepting the expert panels findings and recommendations.

I suspicous however that they had already worked out what they had to do but rather than actually change their minds of their own accord they commissioned a committee that would tell them exactly what they wanted to hear - just like the carbon tax committee did.

They didn't really have much choice other than to accept the findings, did they? Why won't this 'responsible government just admit they got it wrong? Not one of them has said that yet.

the recommendations basically support what Gillard put on the table 6 weeks ago ...why doesn't Abbott admit he got it wrong when he turned it down?

because its NOT what was on the table 6 weeks ago. Malyaysia is OUT uintil better safety and a better deal is gotten AND nauru and manus is start NOW. and no family reunions.

it was an endorsement of Abbotts policy and a repudiation of Gillards.

This is the first time Gillard said she would process people in Nauru.

Full credit to her for finally admitting though that this is what needs to be done.

what are you on about? She offered to reopen Nauru ...  did you think the plan was to reopen it so as to hold rave parties?

shoe offered to consider it but definately would use malaysia - which everyone opposed.

They have effectively said that we should go back to the way that the Coalition had it before Rudd and Gillard stopped it. That's not what Gillard proposed.

no they didn't ..they didn't rule out the Malaysia swap , in fact they said that with some fine tuning its a good idea ... and it should come into play if needed ... Gillard 6 weeks ago put Nauru back onto the table, and it wasn't good enough for Abbott ... I still haven't heard if he will support the recommendations made by the committee ... whats he waiting for? busy lookingfor a way out of supporting it is he?

Yeah whatever ya reckon, it was Gillard's idea all along. Some fantasy you have.

I never said it was her idea all along you shmuck ... did she or did she not put nauru back onto the table 6 weeks ago?

Id you were up to speed today you would have heard the Coalition are supporting ALL of the recommendations.

so sorry that I'm not up to speed ...but I have a business to run ...  it's good to hear that Abbott isn't trying to weasel out of this now ... 6 weeks to late

rubbish ..its almost exactly what was on the table with a bit of fine tuning

The panel says the Nauru and Manus Island centres should be re-established as soon as possible.

It says the government's Malaysian deal should "be built on further, rather than being discarded or neglected".

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/8515521/expert-panel-recommends-malaysia-nau...

sure, you can argue semantics... but why didn't Abbott argue those semantics 6 weeks ago? the suggestions are braoadly what was on offer ... the only real difference is the suggestion that an asylum seeker has no right to apply for family reunion visas in the future ...  which no party had previously asked for ..
