Fraser is a blight on the Liberal history. Hell, as a Liberal voter myself, I've got way more respect for any Labor PM more than him, discluding Gillard. I wasn't at voting age when he was in, the first election I voted in was 1996. If I had been, it would have been an informal vote.

Fraser agrees with what I wrote last night, if these refugees were white farmers from Zimbabwe we would accept them with open arms.
We could learn a lot from our  PMs before the lying little rodent.

Former prime minister Malcolm Fraser says recommendations in the Houston report on the processing of asylum seekers are ''racist'' and in some ways worse than the Pacific Solution under John Howard.

Speaking to the National Times over lunch at the Asylum Seeker's Resource Centre in West Melbourne, Mr Fraser said that with it being proved how mandatory detention traumatises refugees under the Pacific Solution, it was even more inhumane to reintroduce it.

Mr Fraser said amendments to legislation allowing offshore processing of asylum seekers that will be put to Parliament this week would needlessly punish some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

''I think the impact will be tougher than Howard's Pacific Solution because there is no time limit on how long people will be in these detention centres, it's indefinite,'' he said.

He said children held in detention would be worse off under the recommendations.

''The minister will no longer be guardian of children, so the convention on the rights of the child, which we've agreed to, suddenly means nothing.''

Mr Fraser said the amendments would not stop the boats and that more people would be at risk of drowning.

''The Liberals and others say that Howard stopped the boats, but if you look overall at what happened, the Taliban fell. The numbers of refugees going to Europe fell just as dramatically at the same time and no country in Europe had yet introduced the punitive measures that Australia introduced.''

Mr Fraser said the sensible alternative was to have large processing centres, in Malaysia or Indonesia, with the commitment that those recognised as genuine refugees would come to Australia.

More than 246,000 refugees, mostly from IndoChina, came to Australia under the Fraser government. The current humanitarian intake is 13,750 per year.

Mr Fraser said that very few boats landed in Australia during his time because there was an organised alternative.

Just 30 boats arrived in the last four years of his prime ministership.

Mr Fraser said the Houston panel's recommendations were racist because if white farmers from Zimbabwe had fled persecution to Australia via boat, they would be accepted.

He said he hoped the amendments would be challenged in the High Court.

''I would be delighted to think it might be open to a High Court challenge but they will obviously be trying to cover their tracks.''

He accused the Labor and Liberal parties of ''behaving disgracefully and damaging Australia's reputation, not just in our own part of the world, but right around the world''.

He's right - we are racist - even I must be.

I would much rather have educated english speaking people than anyone else.

Does that mean I'm racist?   Shocked

Skippy,
I'm not that happy about the high numbers of Sudanese coming here.
I suppose if they were educated it would be ok.
Most of them only learnt how to dissassemble, clean & re-assemble an AK47 for their education.

I don't want any religious nuts coming here - be they muslims or christians.

I just wish that we'd unsign the refugee convention & not accept any refugees.
Do China or Malaysia accept Sudanese refugee people?

Why is it our duty somehow?

Bottom line is Australia needs a new declaration of its independence and a renewed affirmation of our legal covenant as citizens on this continent and our inviolable eternal rights... Smiley Smiley

Most advanced/wealthy/first world societies accept refugees, why should we be any different ?
I hate all religion, Muslims are no more loopy than bible bashes. A lot of good migrants came here that couldn't speak English, as long as they are prepared to learn it and contribute to our society why are current refugees any different to Greeks or Italians that came here unable to speak English?

because we can ... because 1 or 2 hundred years from now if the tables are turned, and if your grandchildren or their children ever have to flee for their lives, you would hope someone would be in a position to give them a chance  ... they don't want free houses etc (despite what some morons on here say) they just want a chance to live their lives in safety and to provide for their kids .... which is probably the same thing you want for your family ... if we cannot help now, with the overabundance of prosperity that we enjoy in this country, when can we help?

Skippy - not all migrants contribute.
Many are nothing but a burden on everyone else -
& they have children who they can't support without social security.
