This Welfare Board needs more charitable supporters, welfare being something that flows from the loving, engaged, charitable heart. But as the welfare has been franchised to the Government, so has the engagement and the charitable heart. Welfare is depersonalised and institutionalised.

And so everyone is waiting for the Government to do somefin' about it (ie throw money at vit, since that's all a Government can do as all it has is money, no heart, not being a person).

So mebbe the Welfare Board IS the Apathy Bord already.

We really should question the assumption that it is a governments duty to support the poor, the lazy and the wretched. It really is one big negative feedback loop.

They make us dependant on them.
They resent us for being dependant.

Oh I know, I know, I'm a big nasty man for questioning the status quo, but let me ask you this - what have YOU done that is charitable?  What sacrifices have YOU made?  I'd bet the house it's less than what I have - and I don't even claim to be altrusitic.  I'm openly and unshamedly motivated by rational self-interest.

But Elvis, how does that work? I hear you ask.  Ever heard the maxim "giving is it's own reward"  I'm sure you've heard it, but not given it a second thought.  The benefits mightn'y be direct, immediate or material, but there are benefits.  Just claiming to approve of something that's going to happen whether you like it or not isn't anything to preen about.

The so-called charitable, egalitarian left don't care. Everything is palmed off to the government. I've taken issue with a number of posters who claim to be driven by altruistic motives, and their response every time is 'my tax dollars can look after that.' In effect, it makes them feel nice and fuzzy inside because someone, somewhere is doing their moral work for them. They then feel as if they can sprout their moral slogans with superiority, even though they are doing jack sh*t.

The welfare state adds to the isolation insofar as it cuts out true egalitarian motives. The family is removed from the equation of helping, and the responsibility is palmed off to the government. This is why in non-Western countries family plays a large role in one's life; they don't have government support so the family is obliged to look after extended family members.

No. My point was that their family ought to play more of a role in their lives rather than palming it off onto the government.

But if we had an Apathy Board, what's the chance that no-one would be bothered to post anything on it?

Sure God created man before woman. But then you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece.

Well if theres no dole or disability benefits from the government then what would they live on? Families cant care for them because they have to go to work. Low income earners have enough problems going into debt to pay rent.

Hmm.  You really can't think of any alternative to the welfare state?  No family or community based initiatives?

Makes you wonder how anyone survived before the welfare state....which doesn't exist in most parts of the world to this day.

Oh.  OK spot.

That kinda conflicts with reality, but I'm experienced enough to know not to bother trying to get anything meaningful from you.

Why is that, mother?

Even as every charity welfare organisation started as a private initiative, why is government taking over welfare? Why not leave interpersonal relationships interpersonal? Why de-personalise them?

To the contrary. I think people are very interested in apathy. Apathy energises people.
The board would be like an Apathy Anonymous. People could tell us how they didn't use to care but now they do.
Or vica versa. People want to self-disclose.
Wink
