Yes I can think of a few other reasons. What I can't think of is why an 8 year old would be in one of the most dangerous places on earth at the time if they weren't local. Who the hell would take their "white" Australian kid into Vietnam during the war?

Well a good question imo but i wasnt the only one. There was a whole private school full of us. Americans, italians, aussies, etc but the french kids went to a french school.

It makes me wonder what arseholes took their kids to iraq and afganistan (prolly not so many in afganistan).

Yes then i went to the phoenix. I cant find it on the internet though. It also was an american private school which only went to 6th class (grade). You were on your own after that but i was in 4th class when i came back to australia in 1972.

No but i was older than other kids in 4th class in australia so i skipped 5th class and i was still always 1 year older than everyone else. the schools didnt translate very well. I was too far ahead of the 4th class anyway. Actually i dont really remember but i dont know if i actually did go to 4th class here. Prolly not.

"Dependents of Americans working for private firms in Vietnam were not covered by the presidential order, and so the education of those choosing to remain in Saigon was later provided by several private schools established in Saigon after the evacuation. One of these schools was called the “Phoenix Study Group”, whose students were described as “children of diplomats, wealthy businessmen and American civilians.”[2] This follow-on school remained in existence until the fall of South Vietnam to forces of North Vietnam in April 1975."
