Has J.K.Rowling plagiarised J.R.Tolkien?
Oct 2nd, 2012 at 7:35pm

I started watching the Harry Potter movies over again. I have read all the books and enjoy Harry immensely.

However certain little things started to bite, I kept thinking of similarities with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings a tomb written way before Rowling's Potter.

Here's a few to go on with, I'm only early into this but here we go.

Froddo carried a heavy burden and when he placed the ring on and disappeared the burden of the Dark Lord Saran came close and tortured Froddo.

When Harry was close to the Dark Lord Voldemort his scar would act up and he be came tortured.

Froddo was given a magical sword by Arwen.

Harry had the magical sword of Griffindor choose him.

Gandalf rode a bird to freedom from Sauranon's Tower.
Harry rides to freedom on the back of a bird.

Froddo becomes invisible when he pulls on the ring.

Harry becomes invisible when he pulls on the cloak of invisibility.

Froddo carried the heaviest burden in the world.

Harry carried the heaviest burden in the world.

The Wraiths had no faces and their screams made victims weak.

The Dementors had no faces an their screams made victims weak.

The Elf Queen gave Froddo the light of Erandea for light when all things were dark.

Dumbledore bequeathed the magic light to Ron Weasley to create light when all light could not  be had.

The Troll attacks Froddo in the the mountain dwarves' cave.

The Troll attacks Harry in the toilet block at Hogwarts.

This is only  my first day of thinking about this one.

Feel free to add to the list. Let's see how much of Harry belongs to the Lord of the Rings.

Oh and yes....J. R.Tolkien and...J.K.Rowling?????

Plagiarism is when you copy word for word.

Lord of the rings may have gotten the ideas from else where too. Most stories draw from other ideas. Just about every robot story has the 3 rules of robots (dont hurt humans etc) which were invented by asimov. These concepts get thought up and adopted by the fiction community.

Spot of Borg, just idle observations here, only light hearted, I adore Rowling's writings, however I disagree with you on the law regarding plagiarism.

Yes the law regarding robots, obviously; The Terminator was perhaps a big turning point regarding that rule.

Good luck...Red

Tolkien got it from Celtic and Teutonic myths. All storytelling is plagiarism.

Rowling's latest book is heavily influenced by the 19th century English novels.

Tolkien was a professor at Oxford (like his friend CS Lewis) and an authority on Old German and Saxon and Viking literature. He got a lot of the material for his Ring trilogy where Wagner got his material for his Ring cycle -  the Old Norse Sagas. Wagner wanted to replace Christianity, Tolkien (and Lewis) to strengthen it.
The uses of literature, what?

If you're going to accuse Rowling of plagiarising Tolkien, then you may as well accuse every fantasy writer since Tolkien of the same. Tolkien literally invented the entire genre - most of the concepts that all fantasy writers use were invented by Tolkien.

Did he? That's a bit like Larkin and his observation that "sexual intercourse began in nineteen sixty-three".

I thought it was Homer who came up first the first fantasy story. Or the author of Gilgamesh. Or at the very least Tolkien's sources, the Norse story tellers. Tolkien was a very good pupil and repaid them all well - but he didn't invent anything except the Inklings.

Keep it coming friends, let's discuss the Fantasy genre, much better than the crap that is in the headlines day in day out. Grin

For instance do you think that Dumbledore really played Harry? I mean he knew that Harry would have to die because that was the only way Voldemort would die.

Incidentally the Potter movies suffered an excrutiating blow when good old hard drinking Richard Harris died and they wheeled in the Singing Detective Michael Gambon.

Gambon...hell...he wasn't fit to walk in Harris' shadow as Dumbledore.
