Powerful 6.5 quake strikes near Solomon Islands

An earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude on the Richter scale has struck west of Solomon Islands at a depth of 30km, according to the US Geologic Survey.

The earthquake‘s epicenter was located some 67 kilometers from the town of Kirakira, the capital of Makira-Ulawa Province in the Solomon Islands. The quake was initially measured at 6.8 magnitude , but later revised to 6.5.

No Tsunami warning has been issued by either the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center or the emergency services of Australia and New Zealand.

Solomon Islands sits on an earthquake prone zone of the Australian plate. It is one of the most seismically active areas of the world because of constant convergences between the Australian and Pacific plates. Since the beginning of 20th century there have been fifteen earthquakes measuring 7.5 in magnitude or higher.

Mount Paektu, a deadly and active North Korean super volcano, is set to erupt and cause a global catastrophe, the likes of which would not have been seen for a thousand years.

The active volcano is responsible for one of the deadliest eruptions in human history and experts believe history is about to repeat itself.

The 9,000 feet giant volcano located on the border between North Korea and China is the highest peak of the Korean Peninsula.

Mount Paekdu is not far from a North Korean nuclear test facility where the government is conducting nuclear bomb tests.

Such has been the fear around Mount Paektu that it has sparked a rare collaboration with North Korea and the West, with the largely secretive nation inviting scientists from the UK and US to help study it.

This volcano was thought to have minimal sulphur release. Now, new studies show that the eruption could eject far more sulphur into the atmosphere than previously thought. In contrast to earlier estimates, the 946 eruption did eject large volumes – up to 45 megatons – of sulphur into the atmosphere.

Mount Paektu once underwent one of the most devastating eruptions in history in 946 AD when it erupted so powerfully that it formed a five kilometre caldera at its summit and produced enough ash that it even showered Japan – almost 1,100km away.

Bogoslof volcano in Alaska erupts Ash Cloud could reach 30,000 feet / Aviation Red Alert

Bogoslof Volcano erupted Friday morning, and the observatory says it generated an ash cloud that may be as high as 25,000 feet.
Volcanic ash above 20,000 feet is a threat to airliners flying between Asia and North America.

The volcano 850 miles southwest of Anchorage has erupted more than 25 times since mid-December and could continue periodic eruptions for months. It also erupted Thursday.

After Friday's event, the Aviation Color Code was raised from orange to red, the highest level. The observatory says the cloud could reach 30,000 feet.

The National Weather Service issues alerts to traffic controllers after significant eruptions.

Two Asteroids Buzz Earth in One Two Punch - They will Pass Extremely near our Planet, at 0.1 and 1.0 LD.

Asteroid 2017 BH30 is Set to Pass extremely close to Earth Jan. 30. The space rock was first observed by Catalina Sky Survey on 2017-01-29. It will fly by Earth on Jan. 30 at 0.1 times the distance to the Moon at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 15.6 km/s. It is estimated to be 4.6 m - 10 meters in size. Condition code of 6.

Another newly discovered asteroid is going to pass close to Earth on Jan. 31.
Asteroid 2017 BJ30 was first observed on Jan. 29 and it will fly by Earth on Jan. 31
at 1.0 times the distance to the moon at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 22,210 km per hour. It is estimated to be 13 - 28 meters in size.

A small asteroid (7-16 m) made a close approach at 1.1 times the distance to the moon on Jan. 26. 2017 BA7 passed at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 11 km/s.
