I was working in the classroom earlier this year, and I was gobsmacked by the standard of education. Grade3, and some kids not being able to write simple three letter words, other kids trying to read books with three one syllable words. The red truck.....couldn't do it, way, way, way behind the eight ball.

Do you think we would have launched an 'education revolution' if things were ok?

The system is stuffed, we are going backwards.....shame Australia shame!

Very true Swagman....but what is the 'incentive' when it's considered 'naughty' to hold kids back a grade because they can't read, write or count???

If they were held back, there would be an overwhelming number of eight, nine and ten year old's in grade one. That wouldn't work either.

There must be more time spent on the basics in the lower years, a lot more time, even if it means no religion, Auskick or science.

Even an extra two lessons per day would improve the outcomes.

Less waste of time, more reading, writing and arithmetic. Lift our game now, before we have a whole generation of illiterates.

And it wouldn't actually HAPPEN...not after the first 2 or 3 years of that system...

Once the parents, (and/or the children) realised that they had TO actually work for something, then they would actually start making an effort...

I was born 12 years after you (1963)...and when I was at school, if you didn't make the 'cut' , you didn't go up a grade...we ALL learned to read, write and count in kindergarten or Grade 1...

Most kids (used to) be able to able to do that before they started school. maybe the problem isn't so much with education, but with the poor attitude, and lack of attention from parents?

It was extremely sad nail. What chance will those kids have of getting a job when they drop out at age 14? They are totally let down by the system, there just isn't enough staff to give them the extra time they need to become literate. They will follow in their parents footsteps and lead a life on benefits. Now is the time to break the cycle of dependence, but we don't do it.
