Another School Shooting in America
Dec 15th, 2012 at 6:49am

Sorry its not a good article - theres better ones out there.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/newtown-shooting-residents-shocked-mass-killing-adorabl...

Quote:
The small town of Newtown, Conn., was shocked when a gunman killed 27 people, mostly children, at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a school in the quaint community that parents call "an adorable little town."

Newtown's schools went into lockdown this morning as SWAT teams descended on the Sandy Hook Elementary after the shooting was reported to state police at 9:40 a.m.

"[We] never would have thought anything like this would happen here. It's a large town but it's got a real small-town, family feel, and this is just unimaginable," Christine, a mother of a student at Sandy Hook, told ABC News today.

LIVE UPDATES: Newtown, Conn., School Shooting

As of November, Sandy Hook Elementary School had 456 children enrolled, according to Newtown Public Schools. Most are between 4 and 10 years old.

Joan Varga, whose 24-year-old son Teddy is a fourth grade teacher of all subjects at Sandy Hook, told ABCNews.com that the fourth grade class sang at the high school this week.

"It was big deal, they were so excited. It's a great school, it's a community school. The ceilings are relatively low, the basketball hoops are low. These are just innocent kids. It's awful," she said. "My son is proud to be a teacher. It's just a very good school."

Varga said that her son helped some colleagues get out of the building. He was not teaching at the time of the shooting, but was in a meeting with colleagues in a conference room. She also described the school's principal, Dawn Hochsprung, as a dedicated and caring educator.

"Dawn, who is the principal there, she's married to a teacher down in Danbury," she said. "Their daughter was getting married this summer. It's horrible. She was so excited about her kids and what they were doing at the school."

Sandy Hook Elementary School, which teaches K-4, is a Connecticut Vanguard School, which recognizes academic excellence and high student performance.

Sandy Hook, with a population of about 11,000, is a village in Newtown borough, part of Connecticut's Fairfield County. It sits near the Housatonic River and is a popular destination for beaches and fishing. It is also home to McLaughlin Vineyards, a family-owned and operated vineyard.

"It's an adorable little town," Varga said. "I don't know how you get it back."

The town also has some famous residents, both past and present, perhaps most notably Suzanne Collins, author of "The Hunger Games" series, and Bruce Jenner, the 1976 Summer Olympics decathlon gold medalist. "ER's" Anthony Edwards and illustrator and author William Hamilton Gibson have also called the village home.

Sadly the Americans would rather slaughter each other than part with their guns so if thats their thing and they keep their murderous ways within their own borders Ive stopped caring.

It's quite possible the shooting wouldn't have been possible without the (relatively) easy access to firearms in the United States compared to most other developed countries, but it's obviously not the root cause given it has been a heavily armed society for centuries but school shootings are a recent phenomenon. Many elements in the media however aren't capable of discussing this any other way, and certainly are not willing to admit that American society is a total failure and turns out lunatics like this regularly.

there's always a kneejerk response to DO SOMETHING when black swan tragedies occur

that's because of the law of small numbers--we notice poo like this waaaay more than the 15,000 murders (not to mention attempted murders averted by good luck and/or trauma surgery) a year. overall murder rates for the usa when you control by demography are higher than in european countries but not much higher

9/11 was such a black swan event and americans DID SOMETHING

several unnecessary federal bureaucracies were created, civil rights were drastically curtailed, unnecessary foreign wars were launched, and air travel made miserable for everyone

did these reduce future terrorist attacks? probably not but it's impossible to know

similarly school shootings are black swan events, and unlike terrorist attacks don't threaten the rule of law and thus are less dangerous

very few of them actually happen, and while the individual incidents are atrocious how many people die of school shootings in a year?

regardlesss im not really a fan of gun control and dont think the evidence demonstrates it consequences in that much of an effective decrease in violence but some of the arguments against it appear silly really (and some of the arguments in favour of it arent bad)

like idk i can completely get where people are coming when they say nobody needs to own a semi automatic rifle or an automatic rifle

also that braindead GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE line

This is what my american friend said about it:

Quote:
This shooting at the school is tragic and shocking but not typical. Every day more 35 people are killed by armed robbers, home invaders, or in domestic disputes with firearms. We seldom hear about it on the news, not unless someone famous is involved. About 50 people a day will kill themselves with a gun, many of them are children. The US loses a larger portion of our children to firearms than any other two countries. Every single day of the year. And that doesn't include the victims that survive. 200,000 woundings a year. A study done in 2008 showed that about half of the young people (10 to 19 years of age) that die of unnatural causes will be murdered, 88% from gunshot wounds. But the logic seems to be that about the same number of people will die in alcohol related traffic accidents so guns shouldn't be regulated.

I don't know what the Yanks can do to stop this.

There are so many guns in the USA - more than 1 per person -  300 million -
that you could never get rid of them all.

Even in Australia - just watch the Underbelly series based on true events -
the criminals always seem to have ready access to guns
yet we have strict gun controls.

Yeah they could try to limit the sale of firearms to criminals and mentally ill though. Apparently their gun lobbies dont even want that.

This happens a lot in American schools. Perhaps all the children should be armed.

Americans need and have guns so they can mow down home invaders etc instead of being chopped or shot to death.

We need them for the same reasons, but are not allowed to have them, so as a result we get murdered-hacked to death in our own homes.
Sitting ducks we are.

The 'Rednecks' have the right idea...even granny and the kids are machine gun savvy!

A better idea would be to adopt uncle bambu's watertight/airtight school security systems...no shooters would get in to massacre the office staff, kinder kids, or anyone else then.

People in American forums don't like my idea of all schools being fenced like 'prisons' [see anyone getting into prisons thru the fences or over the walls?]

3 stage entry system, including metal detectors and pat-downs.
Properly-trained staff from uncle bambu's company doing the security. Mean-looking staff, on the lookout for the bad people shooters, [who could be connected with the school/teachers etc in some way].

What price the lives of all those kindy kids and their teachers?

There was a new security system installed in that Newtown school only recently, but someone buzzed the shooter in...his mother worked at the school.

Also, parents etc were piggy-backing in the door when someone else was buzzed in, ...bad security.

The shooter killed his father in NJ, killed his mother in Newtown...and reportedly used her guns to kill the office staff, teachers and the kinder kids at the school.

The teachers/principal ran at the shooter to try to save their students.
Unarmed, they just got slaughtered.

If the principal had emerged from her office firing a machine gun from her hip, she probably would've had a good chance of killing the shooter and saving the lives of the kindy kids and the teachers.

The killer forced his way into the school, and was not buzzed in/let in as earlier reported.
