Enneagrams
Dec 20th, 2012 at 6:19am

I'd be interested if anybody has an opinion on enneagrams. It's a kind of personality test. I was recently asked to complete one as was everybody else in my team.

I have a fairly reliable BS meter, and I immediately got the impression that it was entrenched in the bovine mire somewhere between psychobabble and horoscopes, because the questions were so general that they could have been answered any way. I had to choose an answer, but neither answer applies in most cases.

I  Googled it afterwards, and found that it's not a tool that's used by academics, but lies more in the dubious domain  of new age mystics, snake oil salesmen and business consultants.

Today I am going to a session that will explore team dynamics and it spends 2 hours on this process. I don't think I'll be able to avoid making emperor's new clothes remarks.

I think you know you've got it in one...

I mean, excuse the bugger out of me, but I'm sick of large corporations selling the square root of bullshit as a method for demonstrating the prowess of their team to gullible clients.

One of the countless ways of engaging with God and cultivating and communing with one's soul without needing to make reference to either God or one's soul. In other words, one of countless 'modern' attempts of trying to speak about ageless things in 'new' ways.

Sad, silly, bombastic, tidy, complex, revelatory or opportunistic - something for every personality type.

muso, you could just ask the team for a 2 hour discussion on the significance of your "pushing the boulder" avatar.

Well we went around the table describing our personality types. Actually I picked the least likely personality type to start with. When he questioned it,  I told him that I was a strong cynic, because I believed that enneagrams were totally without any foundation, apart from Sufi mysticism, numerology and other superstitions. I also said that I couldn't believe that anybody had actually paid money for this. (I was a bit disruptive I guess)

So overall, I didn't come out as a  team player  Grin
