ANTI-INTELLECTUALISM 1: LIBRARIES,...
Dec 28th, 2012 at 5:38pm

They no longer care for peace and quiet.

The elderly citizen is treated like a piece of poo in them.

Kids are allowed to break everyones concentration when libraries are supposed to be a place of contemplation.

The internet at todays libraries is an appalling, disgracefully insulting joke but in particular the system now used for searching for books in the library itself is just vomit. It's as if the libraries of today are telling its tax-paying customers to "Get back to consuming!!"

WHO CAN FAULT ME ON ANY OF THESE POINTS??

*Sure....they're anti competitive as any subsidised job is.  It wouldn't be there without the tax payer.  Very damned difficult for a brainwashed collectivist to understand that I know....  (swaggy) *

Libraries used to be quiet places, not now with mobile phones ringing very, very loudly and people chatting on them even louder.....how rude!

I really don't want to listen to someone's conversation when I'm at the library......or any other time for that matter.

The uni library was pretty good, no noisy kids there, and you could stumble across an intellectual or two if you were lucky.

Sure God created man before woman. But then you always make a rough draft before the final masterpiece.

The NSW State Library seems not to suffer from such faults in my experience - if faults they are. Nobody has tried to wrap a large sheet of toilet paper around me and flush me down the hole.

Yes, City of Sydney libraries can be a little noisy, inevitably a consequence of the move towards collaborative use, rather than solitary introverts sitting in the Reading Room and trying to write a successor volume to Das Capital.

A librarian's most important word used to be "sssh!". Now it may be "google".

I agree that trawling through a library catalog on a computer terminal is a far inferior experience to wandering through miles of stacks, sampling a book here, a book there. But stack surfing has been replaced by web surfing. We may even be the better off for it.
