THE federal Coalition looks set to announce a second airport in Sydney in its first term of government if elected, with shadow treasurer Joe Hockey declaring there should be "no barrier" to a hub at Badgerys Creek.
Mr Hockey is pushing hard within party ranks for the western Sydney proposal - perhaps even as an election policy - and said he hoped a "bipartisan" position with Labor could be worked out.
He yesterday likened not having a second airport to not having one in Adelaide or Brisbane and dismissed concerns such a policy could ruin the Coalition's chances of winning the marginal seat of Lindsay.
"The suggestion that (an airport at) Badgerys Creek is going to disadvantage western Sydney is just rubbish," Mr Hockey said.
"If you have a second airport in the Sydney basin there will be a massive financial and employment boost.
"Mark Latham and Pat Farmer as the members for Werriwa (and Macarthur) were strong advocates for it."

Just like the very fast train and other big ticket items the second airport dream keeps popping up. What a complete dope Joe is. Joe it takes MONEY to build these items. Joe, consider the piecemeal approach to the Pacific Highway as an example. Bits here and there and works suspended due to lack of funding until the federal and state gov'ts agree on some dollar for dollar formula. So it would be with a second airport: a fragmented approach to its construction punctuated by governments reluctant to fund their share of the burden.
My father told me that in the mid-70's a MANS study was launched (I think it was Major Airport Needs for Sydney). It's now 2013 and our alleged 'leaders' have done NOTHING. Thirty plus years and zilch.
Sydney's second airport will only be considered AFTER we spend OUR PHUKING tax dollars on:
asylum shoppers
funding the UN
funding the PLO
funding PNG
funding parts of Africa
funding the Solomon Islands
funding the education system in Sri Lanka
funding funding funding
and then comes....Sydney's second airport.
