Lets see why.

High Aussie dollar.

Low interest on new cars, 2.9%.

No deposit and interest free for five years.

Free rego and third party.

Free fuel for a year.

First year free service.

Yep that could be why.

still doesn't account for predictions that the economy is stuffed ... even with all those 'positive' points, peole wouldn't buy if they didn't have the money or were concerned with making repayments.

Do the math Johhn.

Borrow $30,000 for a car, interest at 10 or 12 percent fixed over five years is a minimum of $15,000. Throw in no deposit free rego and third party and that is a huge saving.

Nah, surely not?

According to the industry spokesman -
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber says the result was an all-time high for the new car market.

"Australia avoided much of the global financial crisis aftermath and with production resuming in Thailand and Japan, the automotive industry was able to respond to the enthusiasm of the car buying public," Mr Weber told reporters in Sydney.

"The record 2012 is a combination of these factors."

He rejected suggestions the figure was a "false number" inflated by incentives and bonuses at dealerships.

"The number that we have here is a very valid number," he said.

Surely, he wouldn't tell porkies?

That said, when we got our new car in August, the dealerships sure did tick a lot of boxes!

you do the maths .... you still need $30 000 .... I certainly wouldn't indebt myself of $30 g if I was concerned I would be unable to pay it back ....

If you think the economy is in good shape adel then you are either ignorant or lying to yourself.

It's not. People are doing it tough out there and some of you should have a bit of respect for that.

By any measure Australia is still going gang busters...the economy may not be over heating as it was in Howards last term in power but in the long run sustainable growth is way better than run away house prices, record household debt and a govt propping up surpluses by record taxation and slashing public heath, education and infrastructure spending...All of which created a massive burden on households, local councils and state govts.

There are no Australian owned car companies..we are either propping up the USA, Asian or European economies when it comes to buying cars.

A managing director of a construction company in Melbourne tells me a very different story.
He said several guys are going to the wall every week, the mining boom masks a serious issue across Australian industry and many projects are being funded now by cheap supply from China.

I think you'll find the economic reality out there behind your headlines is quite worrying.
