I am a believer that Martin Luther was quite right to reject Rome as having completely lost it's way.

But ,I mean, gengis khan used to massacre every man woman and child. The aztecs were fond of a bit of human sacrifice.

The Roundheads and the cavaliers butchered plenty. The atheist japs killed 20 million Chinese less than 100 yes ago.
The guillotine got a good workout in France.

Yes - well this thread is about Christianity today.
What concerns me is that the Holy book that was followed in the past led to the Inquisition.
That book hasn't changed so why doesn't the Church re-write their Bible & admit that it was wrong?
Basically the Inquisition was trying to rid the world of devils & witches -
& the people in the Church still believe in such forces.
The Pope's last Easter message was full of devil talk & the present Pope
was the leader of the Modern Inquisition now called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

I think some of the interpretations of the bible written by christians like powell and scott peck are incredibly useful self help books.

i'm fairly sure "the power of positive thinking " by norman vincent peale. i think he was a baptist pastor.

i dont find the old testament of any use whatsoever.

zebedee was the son of ezekial was the son of jeremiah (yawn)
and MOST people would never understand by god commanded abraham to kill his only son (though i have read a good interpretation of this).

spot likes to call these fairy tales. even if we see them as fables (as done by aesop) they are some of the best fables ever written and hugely helpful for living a rich and fulfilled life.

"i came to give you life and life to the full"

nearly all people i meet who are "fulfilled ' have a keen interest in religion.

many many astrophysicists eventually lose their aetheism.

it is a best seller , but only because of the inspirational (possibly divine) character at the centre of the story,
still a good read without that leveticus fellow Wink

it is a complex book and treating it simplistically will always get the wrong result. The book is the story of God's relationship with man and Jesus the central theme. Failure to understand or accept the relevence does not mean it is irrelevant. Leviticus for instance is the 'shadow' version of the 'substance' as demonstrated in Hebrews. once again it is the parallel development of Gods plan that shines thru. But you wont get it from a mere cursory reading.

If the church no longer uses Leviticus, and Jesus didn't have it in for gays, why does the church have it in for gays? On who's authority? if they are not using the word of God.

Why do Christians say homosexuality is a sin if they don't use the breathed word of God as a guide? Who told them it's a sin?

Yes - well this thread is about Christianity today.
What concerns me is that the Holy book that was followed in the past led to the Inquisition.
That book hasn't changed so why doesn't the Church re-write their Bible & admit that it was wrong?
Basically the Inquisition was trying to rid the world of devils & witches -
& the people in the Church still believe in such forces.
The Pope's last Easter message was full of devil talk & the present Pope
was the leader of the Modern Inquisition now called the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

my feeling is the pope would be totally irrelevant to most chritians and indeed most catholics.
my feeling is the rubbish written in the old testament would also be irrelevant.
i am an affirmed cherry picker and i would hope people would take the spirit of jesus's message. still a very good message and ignore what is in the rest of the book.

i do agree, it is time for a rewrite of the book.
it is time for christianity to be taught in conjunction with science.
