class?  the election clearly showed people didn't want the GST

he bribed the democrats to jump ship and introduced the GST despite the fact that the wishes of the elctorate were clearly against it. About as much class as a corrupt policeman has in my books.

The Coalition got back in with a majority of 80 seats, and the Democrats did promise to "keep the bastards honest", so I am not seeing your point here.

And before you call me biased or whatever, bear in mind that I voted Labor in 1998.

He did not have the numbers to pass it through, I don't remember the numbers and I can't be bothered looking them up   ....I do remember he had to bribe the Democrats, who went to the same election saying they would not support the Howards GST. Hence, no more democrats.

How is it keeping them honest when they go against the wishes of the voters? In the end that turned out to be just another slogan.

at leastr I dont recall hearing.

THERE WILL BE NO CARBON TAX UNDER A GOVT I LEAD

BUT THERE WILL BE COMPENSATION..

maybe you did.

Finally, Thank You Cods

no one heard it ... it was a 2 minute off the cuff interview that most people missed ... it only became a famous line after she announced she was going to introduce a price on carbon ..... lets not pretend your vote, or most others on here,  hinged on that comment .... good to see at least one of you admit it.

..

So are you suggesting that we try everyone who wants a shot? Why not try Swan, or Pauline Hanson, or Bob Brown, perhaps Peter Garret or Bob Katter? According to your logic, they may be great pm's ... we don't know because 'we've never tried them

the whole point of elections is that you choose the person who you think will do the best job for you ... to argue against someones choice by saying 'you don't know that as you've never tried him' is a ridiculous statement to make.

Just another coalition lie that phony and co won more popular votes at the last election. The numbers tell it all, when I went to school 6,216,445 was a larger number than 6,185,918.

I was alluding to the primary vote.

The Coalition was elected in 1998, as simple as that.

I voted Labor, and presume you did too. That doesn't change the fact that the Coalition was elected.

Maybe. Actually it was the next one after 1998 that was prolly rigged. There was all that scandal in america but they were very quiet here. When ppl started to say so they were shut up fast. It was all very suspect.

Howard was a class above what we have now, on both sides, in my opinion.

I will always respect him for taking the GST to an early election. That took courage, which Gillard refused to show over the carbon tax.

I would take Abbott any day over Gillard, but I still don't really think that he will make a good PM. I would prefer Turnbull, but that won't happen.

I just think that both sides of politics is dreadful at the moment, and yes, while I want the Coalition to win the election, it's through default of wanting rid of Labor, not because I like them.

It's a choice of the lesser of two evils. At least that's how I feel.

Howard was a class above what we have now, on both sides, in my opinion.

In my view a class down on Gillard and debatable with Abbott.

I will always respect him for taking the GST to an early election.

He went for the GST because the Labor opposition was a shambles and he believed he could get away with his famous lie.

He went to an early election for the same reason - tactically he thought it was his best chance of winning.

would prefer Turnbull, but that won't happen.

In my view if Turnbull were a better choice than Abbott it would not be by much and he would not be in front of anyone else.

You are entitled to your views, but I wholeheartedly disagree with them all, as we've debated before.

One concern is that after Abbott and Turnbull Pyne could be next in line - probably no better, has already shown a weakness on honesty and been involved in some pretty grubby dealing.

Yes they won, I'm not disputing that, but over 50% of voters voted against the GST (against the libs, GST was the main issue of that election) . Howards only mandate was to forget the GST and he ignored it.
